Most people drink strong concentrated coffee (we know this as espresso) in very tiny cups with sugar. They dont' drink in huge bekers with milk and sugar like we do in Holland. On the picture the coffeeshop in old center of Uzhgord Leave a Comment

* If you bring flowers, make sure it is an odd number of flowers. * Never put an empty bottle on the table.(only alcoholic drinks bottles, when you are partying) Put the bottle on the floor. * As a rule, you cannot "change hands" when pouring drinks. A person, who started to pour drinks, will be a bartender for the evening. * Do not shake hands accross the threshold of a door. It is considered bad luck. * Never whistle inside the house. It means that there will not be any money in the house. * At the entrance of upscale restaurants, expect that your coat, briefcase or baggage will be checked. * In Orthodox Churches women wear scarves or hats, and men take off their hats. * Be prepared to take off your shoes upon entering a house. Most hosts will provide you with a pair of slippers. * We wear a marriage ring on the right hand here in Ukraine. * Sometimes locals don't want to take money from your hand, so you might be asked to put them on the table, sofa etc., only after that they'll take them. (for ex. if you are renting a private appartment) (explanation: usually this rule is active if you see the person first time) * Don't take the garbage out in the evenings. :-) Leave a Comment

Not everybody can say he or she understands the meaning of the Ukrainian National Anthem. So it might be interesting for you to know the translation of our National Anthem that is not always found on the web sites about Ukraine. This is the English version that is, to my opinion, very close to the original in its meaning: Ukrainian National Anthem She lives on, our Ukraine, Her freedom and her glory. Let us trust that once more fortune May illuminate her story. Like the dew before the sunshine, Our foes disappearing. We shall rule, youthful brethren, Our land nothing fearing, Soul and body sacrificing For our cherished freedom We shall show we are descendants Of mighty Cossack knights. You can listen to its melody here. That is me in Pecherskaya Lavra by OlenaKyiv If you go to traditional church especially if it is small and too traditional, you need to where: if you are a woman: - skirt lower than knee - no open shoulders - cover your head I learnt one trick - you can where everything shirt, but when you go to church take long skarf to close your shoulders, or cover your legs. If you look at the picture, you'll see I wear the scarf I use on the beach. After visiting church you can just uncover yourself, put scarf into your purse and go to night club if you wish. If you are man: - no short pants - no hats, no caps Leave a Comment

Ukrainian national clothes by OlenaKyiv This is Ukrainian clothes of old times. Please, don't think that people wear this nowdays. Of course they do, but only if they are actors during some holidays. Straw hat, linen short with red-color embroidery near a neck. Although this guy wears black pants, traditional Ukrainian clothes included white linen pants. hmmm a lot of laundry for women to do :-) Kozaki wore red wide pants on holidays. If you read Gogol he has amazing description of the male clothes of 18th-19th century in his story "Viy." According to him those pants were so wide that students could hide a lot of food they stole at market there. Leave a Comment

Pirogovo Church by OlenaKyiv Lately you will see many couples in churches who have wedding services there. Espessially it is popular in old churches and it is really nice to feel the spirit of ancient walls. I don't know what bride and groom feels about it and how it influence their future life, but I guess that in most cases it is just the fashion of current time. On the picture there is the church in Pirogovo. I was present on wedding service there for a couple of minutes and I really liked it. P.S. I was as a guest :-) Leave a Comment

Me and Ukrainian KOZAK by OlenaKyiv From old times Ukrainian men wore "sharovary" and "vyshivanku". Sharovary is very wide pants of red or blue color as a rule. It looks like pants of Turkish people and Tatar. It allowed to move, ride, run easily. For students it was great place to hide things they stole on markets. Vyshivanka is shirt with embroidered pictures on it. It is really beautiful and you can see vyshivankas in many places in Ukraine among souvenirs. Just be prepared to pay good sum for them. Ukrainian men as a rule kozaki (military men) wore the "oseledec" or "chupryna". This style of hair dress went from Vikings. Have a look to this site UkrainaRus even you don't understand Ukrainian just scroll down and you will see pictures of Ukrainians wariorrs. Leave a Comment

Singing kozaks by OlenaKyiv Ukrainians have not only melodical language, but they possess great voices, and they really like to sing. Whether it is private party of relatives, or party of people who see each other first time, noone will be shy to sing old Ukrainians songs which came from ancient times and were given from one mouth to another. Some families have books of songs and their favorite songs, which they can't miss after good glass of gorilka. P.S. Gorilka is vodka on Russian... I suggest to try... it is not so bad. Maybe you will get some skills to sing :-) Leave a Comment
