Potatoes in Ukrainian diets

by OlenaKyiv

Ukrainians grateful to Columbus who brought potatoes to Europe from American continent, because potato became the main product used in many Ukrainian dishes such as, soups, mashed potato, stews, pancakes, etc. Potato is cheap on markets; moreover, many Ukrainians grow it on their land. At the same time many Ukrainians hate Columbus because growing potato demands a lot of hard work and effort. Almost all Ukrainians in rural areas grow potatoes and other products on their own. And if you think they use machines and other mechanisms for this, you are mistaken, almost everything done by hands and old farmer equipments. In addition to this, people have to fight the worse enemy of potato plants – Colorado Beetle – that demands for high expenses on chemicals.

Ukrainian cuisine

by OlenaKyiv

Many people asked me about the Ukrainian cuisine, what Ukrainians like to eat, what dishes are traditional, is Ukrainian dishes are spicy. So I decided to make some tips about Ukrainian cuisine. In general, Ukrainian dishes are not spicy. Ukrainians didn’t have an access to spices for many years. My mom told that even black pepper was hard to buy in Soviet times. Now the standard spices used are salt and black pepper. Also bay leaf used in abundance in soups and potato dishes.

Ukrainians and beer

by OlenaKyiv

Ukrainians like beer. They don't just like it, but love it. Among the most polular brands of beer is OBOLON and CHERNIGIV. During my last visit to Ukraine I saw all kinds of other brands on the shelves of a supermarket. It is hard to pick up the one (to me they seem to be the same). None of the party can be without beer. My friends like to drink a lot and especially outdoors. Ukrainian rules about consuming ALCOHOL on the street or in the park are not as strict as American. If you think drinking makes a lot of glass garbage on the streets, you are mistaken, because with your last sip of the beer you will spot some grandmother, or grandfather, hunting your bottle. They make money on picking up empty bottles and selling them to special centers where they will receive not much money, but still it is money that is a rare thing in the pockets of many Ukrainians, esp. elderly.

Traditional Ukrainian Clothes

by OlenaKyiv

This is Ukrainian clothes of old times. Please, don't think that people wear this nowdays. Of course they do, but only if they are actors during some holidays. Straw hat, linen short with red-color embroidery near a neck. Although this guy wears black pants, traditional Ukrainian clothes included white linen pants. hmmm a lot of laundry for women to do :-) Kozaki wore red wide pants on holidays. If you read Gogol he has amazing description of the male clothes of 18th-19th century in his story "Viy." According to him those pants were so wide that students could hide a lot of food they stole at market there.

The clothes when you go to church

by OlenaKyiv

If you go to traditional church especially if it is small and too traditional, you need to where:if you are a woman:- skirt lower than knee- no open shoulders- cover your headI learnt one trick - you can where everything shirt, but when you go to church take long skarf to close your shoulders, or cover your legs. If you look at the picture, you'll see I wear the scarf I use on the beach. After visiting church you can just uncover yourself, put scarf into your purse and go to night club if you wish.If you are man:- no short pants- no hats, no caps

Bus-stops with mosaics

by Enzyme_X

While driving around Ukrain in oir car I noticed that many of the bus stops along the road are very colourful, not just simple boaring gray concrete. On a closer look (and slower driving by) it turned out that the walls are coverd with mosaics. Not just simple patterns, but whole pictures, some of them were quite amazing. You can find them on main roads as (like he one on the picture) on the from-god-forgotten-sideroads.

Vodka !

by josecarlos

I normally don't drink Vodka. Its taste is quite strong...It was until I went to Ukraine that I started liking this lovely spirit. Ukrainians generally put a glass of tomato juice next to their Vodka, and they accompany the whole thing with starters like pickles, sausages, salami, cheese. The technique goes like this:Step 1: Drink the full glass (a small one, like the one used for Tequila shots) keeping your breath. Swallow.Step 2: Drink a full tiny glass of tomato juice. Swallow.Step 3: Quickly, smell a piece of food (like pickles or salami). Amazingly, when you take food to your nose, the ugly smell of vodka in your throat dissapears and you don't want to vomit.Step 4: Eat the food you were smelling (don't place it again in the bowl or whatever you are using to put the food...)Step 5: Keep drinking and eating until the bottle is finished. And never mix it with any other spirit.Step 6:...

Few simple rules!

by Lensa

* If you bring flowers, make sure it is an odd number of flowers.* Never put an empty bottle on the table.(only alcoholic drinks bottles, when you are partying) Put the bottle on the floor.* As a rule, you cannot "change hands" when pouring drinks. A person, who started to pour drinks, will be a bartender for the evening.* Do not shake hands accross the threshold of a door. It is considered bad luck.* Never whistle inside the house. It means that there will not be any money in the house.* At the entrance of upscale restaurants, expect that your coat, briefcase or baggage will be checked.* In Orthodox Churches women wear scarves or hats, and men take off their hats.* Be prepared to take off your shoes upon entering a house. Most hosts will provide you with a pair of slippers.* We wear a marriage ring on the right hand here in Ukraine.* Sometimes locals don't want to take money from your...

Weddings in the Church

by OlenaKyiv

Lately you will see many couples in churches who have wedding services there. Espessially it is popular in old churches and it is really nice to feel the spirit of ancient walls. I don't know what bride and groom feels about it and how it influence their future life, but I guess that in most cases it is just the fashion of current time.On the picture there is the church in Pirogovo. I was present on wedding service there for a couple of minutes and I really liked it.P.S. I was as a guest :-)
