by Klod5

Specialises in the work of dramatic Ukrainian and foreign playwrights. Performances range from comedy to drama. Commonly known as Kiev's number one experimental scene. Idea of the new Kyiv theatre belongs to Eduard Mytnytsky, who headed this artistic group. Theatre was always tended to experiment. A small stage - "Theatre in foyer" was created in the theatre for first time in Kyiv. First performances that were staged at this small space - "Pravda pamiati (Truth of the memory", "Zakon vichnosti (The law of eternity)". By the way, performance "Brekhnia (The lie)" based on V.Vynnychenko became a certain linguistic innovation - for the firs time Ukrainian play was presented in Russian theatre. Theatre started to work out the literature works of F.Dostoyevsky, Ì.Bulgakov, Ò.Mann, L.Pirandello. "Left drama", as youth calls the theatre, continue to synthesise Russian and Ukrainian plays. Between Hitler And Stalin Ukraine In World War II

by Klod5

"Historian Norman Davies appears in the film 'Ukraine In WWII" and provides the historical context: 'These countries were caught in the middle of an impossible dilemma. There was murder, genocide, oppression on both sides and there was no way to escape." " 'If you fled eastward, you were running the gauntlet of Soviet oppression; if you fled westward you were running the risk of Nazi oppression'...'Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were partners. They weren't allies but they were clearly partners. I would say -- partners in crime. Germany -- attacked eight European countries; the Soviet Union attached and invaded five"...Many people in the West don't realized that the Ukrainians were fighting both against Hitler and against Stalin.'Slavko Nowstski is directing the film. Famine In Ukraine 1932-1933

by Klod5

In the 1920s the USSR's New Economic Policy (NEP), designed to rehabilitate the postwar economy, helped rejuvenate agriculture in Ukraine. Anxious to attract popular support, the Soviet regime also introduced Ukrainization, a policy that encouraged the use of Ukrainian language and the development of national culture. Beginning in the late 1920s, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin brutally reversed both trends. Peasant landholdings were forcibly collectivized and crops were extorted to support industrialization. The result was a terrible famine in 1932 and 1933 in which an estimated 5 million to 7 million Ukrainians perished. At this catastrophic cost, industrial production was pushed to record-breaking levels; in 1940 it was more than seven times as high as in 1913. In the mid-1930s Stalin initiated mass arrests and executions of his opponents or possible opponents, resulting in the...

Ukrainian National Costume as a Witness for Past

by Klod5

In the Ukrainian town of Pereyaslav-Khmel’nytsky there is a museum of Ukrainian traditional, national dress. It is housed in an eighteenth-century building and has in its collection about 1500 shirts, blouses and other embroidered items, about 200 woman’s adornments, over 200 belts, aprons, head-dresses and other pieces of traditional Ukrainian costume plus a lot more. The layman comes to the museum to gaze at the exhibits in wonder and admiration, and the historian comes to study the changing styles, types of dress, and through them better understand Ukrainian culture and everyday life of the past.

Kobzar Players

The bandura is a traditional plucked-string musical instrument from Ukraine. Its timbre resembles a harpsichord's. Although similar-sounding names appear in numerous European and Asian languages (Examples: Spanish bandurria, pandura of Savetian and central Asian societies, Indic tambura, and English bandore), the Ukrainian bandura evolved from a line of lute-like instruments in Ukraine. An 11-th century fresco in Kiev city's Saint Sofia Cathedral shows a possible anscestor. The main distingushing characteristics are 1) the absence of frets, which means that each string can sound only one note, as in a harp, and 2) the presence of treble strings stretched over the soundboard, off center from the bass strings which run along the neck. The result is an asymmetric body. As a homemade folk instrument, there are variations in the pattern. From 15th to 18th centuries, bandura was played by...

Choral

by Klod5

Ukrainians possess a remarkable repertoire of folk songs, and singing is an important part of their culture. In the 17th century they developed an innovative form of choral singing a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment). Important composers of church music in the late 18th century included Maksym Berezovsky, Dmytro Bortniansky, and Artem Vedel. In the 19th century, Semen Hulak-Artemovsky wrote a popular comic opera based on folk themes, Zaporozhets za Dunayem (Zaporozhian Beyond the Danube, 1863).
