Folk dances

by Klod5

Many of the dynamic and colorful folk dances of Ukraine reflect a rural or cossack lifestyle. The oldest dances are the khorovody, agricultural dance games associated with the cult of the sun. Originally, folk dances were either accompanied by songs or by instruments. They were also exclusively female, such as the metylytsia, or exclusively male, such as the arkan or the famous hopak; today both males and females participate in the same dances. Numerous Ukrainian dance troupes cultivate the traditional folk dances.

The culture and history of the Ukrainian people ..

by Klod5

The culture and history of the Ukrainian people date back many centuries. The roots of the Ukrainian nation go back into the deep of centuries to the tribes of the Trypillye culture, which played a big role in the formation of primitive tribal communities on the territory of Ukraine and the ancient forefathers of the Slavs. This ancient land remembers many civilizations. Cimmerians, Scythians, Taurians, Sarmatians, Goths, Greek city-states of the northern Black Sea coastal area and the Crimea left a notable trace in the history of our country and promoted the cultural enrichment of neighbouring tribes, with the Slavs among them. Numerous monuments discovered during excavations testify to the existence of an alliance of Slav tribes. One of them, known under the name of the State of Antes (4th century B.C.), occupied a large territory and has signs of a state structure in the form of...

Hospitality & Vodka

by beluga

Ukrainians can show great hospitality. When you're invited to their home for dinner, better be hungry when you walk in the door. Because they will serve you lots of food. Showing gratitude is simple - just eat a lot, then some more and say thank you.One tip on the vodka. You are only expected to drink vodka after a toast (short speech). If you decide to struggle to maintain sober, just don't empty your glass completely during each toast but drink half your glass during each toast. It's accepted "cheating".

Importance of history

by beluga

A thing which surprised me a bit is how much history is "alive" in Ukraine. In almost every town or vilage there is a monument remembering WW II. And often these monuments are still used for different ceremonies - remembering the first battle of Sevastopol, remembering the liberation of Sevastopol etc.Offcourse Ukraine and the whole of the former SU suffered staggering losses in WWII, uncomparable to losses in the West. But also previous wars are remembered - the Anglo-French expedition in the Crimea for example. Guides tell about it like it happened yesterday. My general impression was that history is taken very seriously.

Bringing Flowers

by Caius

You should bring flowers when visiting, and especially when you are a male visiting a female, but do NOT bring an even number of flowers, unless you are going to a funeral! Even numbers of flowers are associated with mourning.

The Ukranians take their...

by EskiMoe

The Ukranians take their drinking seriously and there are a number of 'rules' one should know. First, the glass should stay on the table when someone pours, don't lift it up to 'help'. Normally, you pour for others, and not for yourself. Now - the serious stuff - the toasting. The host will always say the first toast, normally in honor of his guests. The glasses are always put together before drinking, and the first vodka shot goes all the way. Is not polite to leave anything in the glass. The second toast is for the guest to return the honour. So far, nothing really unusual. But - the third toast is ALWAYS in honour of women (wifes, mothers, sisters, lovers, female colleauges etc.). The women around the talbe remain seated, but all men stand up and the glass is again emptied. From now on, you can basically toast for anything, but normally for the people around the table, their work,...

This is a picture of the new money Grivney. When i was there the Ukraine was still using Cuponum and not only was there almost nothing to buy prices were high to boot. My friends in Ukraine tell me over the past 6 years sadly the economic conditions have only gotten worse. there are more products to buy, but fewer people have the money to buy anything. Over the years the inflation rate has been so high that it precludes the ability to quote relative prices. That doesnt make for a stable economy or a fun life. Of all the people I met on my trip that I would consider a friend...over half now live in the somewhere other than Ukraine, mostly in the United States.

Ukraine is bilingual country....

by Serhiy

Ukraine is bilingual country. Western part speaks only Ukrainian, Eastern Ukrainians speak only Russian. All Ukrainians however understand each other easily as they hear both languages from the time they are born. But if you like to be clearly understood in Ukraine it's better to learn common phrases in Ukrainian and Russian (depending on where you plan to go). Usually West-Ukrainians get offended when foreigners speak Russian to them.
