If you experience problems in finding the right things in Luhansk (post office, telegraph, menus in English, institutions, etc.), Intourist company could be one of your assistants then.
They have their office in Kotsiubinsky Street opposite Absolute supermarket and could help you contact any office, offer you any route in Ukraine with the help of other such offices all over Ukraine.
It is a state tourism office. They could also provide you an interpreter during your stay.
Although there is no tourist information in booklets (maps, routes, museums, etc.) about Luhansk, you can agree about the service during your stay here.
    Their phone number is 53 06 51 (it is also a fax) and 53 44 53. Ask Irina.E-mail: lug.inturist@leasat.net

  • King's Rock Diorama - Luhansk
    King's Rock Diorama
    by hunterV, 4 more photos
Our museum of local lore is famous for its dioramas that are to be seen in the nature department.
The represent different areas of our region's nature.
This one represents the area known as Provalye State Reserve located in the southeast of Luhansk region.
King's Rock on the bank of the River Provalye is our wonder of nature:
it is 1.5 km long and is about 70 m high - such a marvelous cliff!
The museum's gem is also "The Polovets Madonna" - the carved stone figure of a woman with a child. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only figure of such kind among all the artefacts of thenPolovets culture in Ukraine.

  • Our Eternal Flame, Luhansk, Ukraine - Luhansk
    Our Eternal Flame, Luhansk,
    Ukraine
    by hunterV, 4 more photos
The city is proud of its revolutionary history and there are several monuments reminding us of the Civil War of 1919 and others.
This one if Eternal Flame located in Marx Street (former Kazan Street).
It was dedicated in 1936 in memory of the first Communists who built the city after the revolution of 1917.
All the Communist demonstrations of the forties used to pass this famous monument .
The place is called Revolutionary Fighters Square.
Another place with memorials is in Revolution Dquare.
Here you can see the oldest monument to Lenin in the city (on the picture here). By the way, I found it exciting to stand at the minitribune there and to imagine myself an old Soviet VIP greeting then people marching by at the demonstration...
    You can also see several graves in Revolution Square (formerly Assumption Gardens): Parkhomenko bust on his grave;
    Mass Grave of Soviet officers who fell in the battle of Luhansk in February 1943;
the grave of Ivan Yakovenko, the leader of the partisan detachment who was killed by the Nazis in August 942.

The museum has a nice local nature exhibition.

Lots of nice (and expensive) stores with a wide choice of goods: cafes and restaurants.

When you arrive to Voroshilov Square located opposite the City Council building at 14 Kotsiubinsky Street, why not drop in at the city council lobby and take a picture at the entrance at the background of our flags: the Ukrainian national flag and the flag of Luhansk (to the right) with two oders above you.
Don't forget to ask for the militiamen's consent for that. The security is to your left at the entrance.
    Some history:
the city was awarded with these two orders:
for tyhe first time in 1924 (with the Order of the Red Battle Banner)
and for the second time - in 1970 (with the Order of the October Revolution) for the great merits of the city residents during the hard times of its history.
I remember it was a great honor in Soviet times when you have a picture taken of you at the background of such a flag.
For example, when I was a soldier in the Soviet Army in the eighties, I saw the pictures of the best soldiers who had a valuable present: their picture at the background of the battle flag of their unit.

    Post Street in Luhansk
    by hunterV, 4 more photos
Allow some to walk about the Old Town streets of Luhansk and to observe the rich variety of archictecture.
This picture was taken in Post Street not far from the former General Post Office at 27 Post Street.
This building in Post Street is the cultural center of the Ukrainian Germans in Luhansk.
Unfortunately some buildings that survived many different catastrophes are in utter disrepair and need repairs badly.
You can also walk along Lenin Street (former St.Petersburg Street) where there are samples of the Old Russian architecture such as the building of the former library located next to "Free Cossacks' Village" restaurant.

Among the great number of the city monuments this one is very popular.
Lots of people have come here to take a picture in front of this monument. You can always see flowers at its foot. The newly-weds usually lay flowers to the foot of this monuments and have their pictures taken. It usually takes place on Saturdays.
There are benches on both sides of the monument and it is/was lit with special light effects at night.
Many people bring flowers to the foot of this monument called
    Christianity Jubilee Monument.
It was dedicated in December 2000. THey say it was carved of the special Italian granite.
The monument was dedicated to the 2,000th Jubilee of Christianity and is the masterpiece of a famous local sculptor and an architect. It was sanctified during its dedication by a large group of priests who came from all over Luhansk region.

MIG-15 as a symbol of endeavor
    by hunterV, 4 more photos
Like in many other towns and cities of the FSU (Former Soviet Union) countries, we have our own war and army memorials...
This one in Ostraya Mogila Block reminds us of the former navigators' glory of Luhansk.
There was a military navigators school in this block that trained military navigators for the whole Soviet Union.
This monument was a present to the pilots of Luhansk in the jubilee year of 1975 when the 30th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Second World War was celebrated.
The monument is MIG-15 rushing to the skies to new victories...
Ostraya Mogila mould is the highest point in the city : 93 m above sea level. You will have a nice view of the city if you climb the mould with an obelisk dedicated to the heroes of the Civil War of 1919.
There is an inscription on the obelisk that reads,Here in Ostraya Mogila in April 1919 the heroic proletariat of Luhansk jointly with the 15th Inzen Division under the leadership of the Bolshevik organization repulsed the attacks of the White Guard troops.
Here in Ostraya Mogila the best sons of Luhansk proletariat, wives of workers and their kids who defended the city under a hurricane of fire died the heroic death of heroes.
Memory of them, of the heroes of the proletarian revolution, will always live in the hearts of the working people.
