The monument to Vladimir Shevchenko (1918-1997), the First Secretary of the regional Communist party committee in the sixties and seventies, must be the only monument to the Communist leader from Luhansk in the city. This bust is located behind our White House (the building of the state regional administration - the building belonged to the Communist party before). The bust represents the face of a resolute and devoted patriot of Luhansk who did a lot to turn it into a modern city with all modern conveniences - the railway station, airport, theaters, museums, concert hall, shopping malls, etc. There is also Vladimir Shevchenko Street in downtown Luhansk and his memorial plaque at the building of Ukrcommunebank next to the Russian Theater. There is only one wooden church in the city I know of: it is dedicated to three saints of the Russian Orthodox Church and is located downtown in the park behind Rossiya department store. The church has a small belfry and two rooms for prayers and a white sculpture of the nativity scene at the entrance. We go there on the eve of each new school year in August to ask for blessing and on Easter to have our Easter buns and eggs blessed by Father Paul, the dean of this church. Leave a Comment

St.Nickolas Transfiguration Cathedral, Luhansk by hunterV, 4 more photos St.Nickolas Cathedral (full name: St.Nickolas Transfiguration Cathedral) is located at 111 International Street. It was built in 1950-1951 and dedicated on February 15, 1951, which was very rare in Stalin times. It is one of the very few Orthodox cathedrals built in the Soviet Union in Stalin times. They say it was built "in exchange" of St.Nickolas Cathedral blown up by the Bolsheviks in the thirties during their militant atheist campaign. The Orthodox Church contributed to the victory in the Great Patriotuic War of 1941-1945 both materially and morally. The Bolsheviks (later Communists) could not conceal that fact and after the war they softened their militant attidude towards the church. The cathedral is located in five minutes' walk from the city conference center in Luxemburg Square. The cathedral has a fully restored building with a new belfry. Also, there is also a web site about our saint Philip of Luhansk (1858-1956) who used to be a deacon of this cathedral: Philip of Luhansk Leave a Comment

Icon of Archbishop St.Luke of Crimea, Luhansk by hunterV, 4 more photos I attended the solemn ceremony of dedicating this chapel called Church of Archbishop St.Luke of Crimea. The ceremony was held by several bishops and chief priests of Luhansk with Most Reverend Joannicky, Metropolitan of Luhansk and Starobelsk. The church is located at the central city cemetery, to your right after you enter it. There is public worship on Sundays at 10 a.m. there. The area surrounding the church itself is a part of the city history. Here at the central entrance to the cemetery you can see the tombs of well-known people of Luhansk who died recently. St.Alexander of the Neva Cathedral, Luhansk by hunterV, 4 more photos There are several new cathedrals now that were built within the last ten years. One of them is St.Alexander of the Neva Cathedral in Budyonny Street next to the University Park in the eastern blocks of the city. It looks very impressive indeed and is ready for public worship. The cathedral was dedicated in September of 2003 by the President. It has two parking lots (which is very rare with other cathedrals), a small park with benches and a spectacular entrance. The cathedral is also known for its bas relief icon at the altar. It depicts the Last Supper and is very rare since it is a bas relief. You will not see such things at our cathedrals. Another unique thing about this cathedral is the big portrait of Patriarch Kirill who resides in Moscow and lead the activities of the Russian Orthodox Chruch to which this cathedral belongs. Scythian Women, University Park, Luhansk, Ukraine by hunterV, 4 more photos These ancient sculptures of women stand in the park of Shevchenko National University. They are called Scythian Women. They stand as symbols of the remote past there. Those nomadic tribes - Scythians - used to inhabit the vast areas of the present Luhansk region and then disappeared suddenly. They were ousted by other, more militan, tribes. These sculptures are among the few relics we have inherited from them. People - mainly young students and their instructors - come here just to stand and stare and, of course, to take pictures... Leave a Comment
