We have a city beach at the Seversky Donets, but bathing has been forbidden there for more than ten years due to the big concentration of dangerous substances in the water. So it's better just to enjoy the sights of the countryside there and not to take a risk. Nevertheless people do bathe at our city beach and beyond its limits.
Lots of stores, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants - that is all about Luhansk, too! Leave a Comment

Big, bulky and unwieldly bags/suitcases are a burden whilst travelling on public transport. Travel as light as possible.
Very cold long winters, lots of ice and snow and was -20 whilst I was there in January 2003. Short hot summers - warmer than UK. Be sensible and dress accordingly. In winter stout waterproof ankle boots, thick socks, thermal gloves, wooly scarf and furry hat are a must have.
Decent, soft Western style toilet paper is a must. Many toilets (both private and public) are simply no more than a hole in the ground and you are required to 'stoop and hover'. In public loos you usually receive only 2 single pieces of shiny paper from the attendant when you pay to enter (for example at Railway Stations). Additionally, you should take a universal fitting sink plug with you. It is customary in Ukraine to wash under running water and you will discover that all wash basins every where including hotels are without a plug.
Standard photo film (eg Agfa) is cheaper than UK. and easily obtained. I usually carry a simple inexpensive 35mm self focusing camera in order not to draw attention to myself and I am careful about local sensitivities.
Use common sense.
Sandwiches and drinks for train journeys. They are usually a long time. Also take something to read. Leave a Comment

Usual bags
In winter the temperature may fall to 10 or 20 degrees below zero centigrade and in summer it rises to more than 30 degrees. Besides, it is often windy with us, so it's good to have a cap on.
Even if you leave something behind, no problem. Many things are available at our stores and markets.

Bring slip-on shoes with you (no shoelaces!). According to our customs we have to take off our shoes when we enter other people’s apartments or your own. Having slip-on shoes will rid you of the hassle of messing with your shoelaces several times a day.Wearing a pocketed undershirt - that’s where you’d better keep your money. No pickpockets can get that. Pickpockets are not so numerous in Luhansk as they are in our capital and in other big cities. They are at the International airport in Kiev, at all underground stations, at the railway station and at the markets… Leave a Comment

If you don't have a GSM cell phone, pick up a $99 phone and get a Ukrainian SIM card for your trip. It proved to be invaluable and a cheap insurance policy. Leave a Comment

If you've ever seen the brown paper towels used in public restrooms, schools, auto repair shops, etc. in the US, THAT'S what every roll of toilet paper is like (at least from what I've experienced) in both Russia and Ukraine. Not good after being there for a week. Leave a Comment

Tabasco sauce, It seems the rearest of comodities In Luhansk, might not mean much unless you want a Bloody Mary. (The ones at the Chelsea restaurant are terrible bland tiny things). Also No Soy Sauce. I must have it on plain white rice. A travel roll of tp is a good thing to have handy, the local public stuff may give you splinters if there is any left. Leave a Comment
