Charles Gascoigne is considered to be the founder of the city. He was appointed the first director of the iron foundry from which the city sprang. He was its director from 1795 till 1806. You can see a medal in his honor at the city history and culture museum (on the picture) and read about his life and work at one of the exhibits of the museum in Karl Marx Street (former Kazan Street). It is interesting to note that many streets in Old Russia were called after Kazan, the Tatar capital, to commemorate the historic Russian victory in the centuries-old struggle between the Tatars and the Russians. This park located in Stone Ford District on the right bank of the Luhanka at the northern entrance to the city has long been a favorite attraction in Luhansk, especially for kids. There are several merry-go-rounds, a 25-meter-high Ferris wheel, several cafes and a small zoo here. The attractions are rather expensive, at least by our local standards. The park opens on May Day, May 1, and attracts a lot of people every year. There is a disco zone, a favorite meeting point of lots of young people from Stone Ford in summer. "A monument a year!" - this is what our mayor said about the necessity to erect monuments in Luhansk. In 2007 a new monument was dedicated in our city: the monument to Mikhail Matussovsky, a famous Soviet poet, the author of many well-known Soviet songs, who was born in Luhansk in 1915. It stands in Red Square at the building of the Institute of Culture. In 2008 a new monument was dedicated in Luhansk. This monument is officially called Caster Monument - and it is dedicated to the iron foundry workers who cast cannons and other products at Luhansk iron foundry at the beginning of the 19th century. The monument was created by a local sculptor Vladimir Mozhayev. Unlike all other monuments it was dedicated twice. For the first time it was dedicated in September 1995 when the bicentenary of Luhansk was observed. It was placed in the main square of Luhansk machine-building factory and was inaccessible to the wide public. In 2008 the monument was taken off its pedestal at the factory yard and brought to the city council building. It was dedicated on September 19, 2008. The memorial plaque attached to its pedestal quotes the decree of Emperor Alexander III on elevating Luhansk factory settlement into the status of a district town. That event took place on September 3, 1882. Our monument was was dedicated in June 1998. Luhansk was one of the last Ukrainian cities to erect this monument. Many different shows and concerts are usually held in front of this monument.Taras Shevchenko, a famous Ukrainian national poet, lived in the 1800s. In his literary works he struggled for the liberation of Ukraine from the rule of tsarist Russia.
