The River Luhanka as seen from May Day Park by hunterV, 4 more photos This park located in Stone Ford District on the right bank of the Luhanka at the northern entrance to the city has long been a favorite attraction in Luhansk, especially for kids and young people. There are several merry-go-rounds, a 25-meter-high Ferris wheel, several cafes and a small zoo here. The attractions are rather expensive, at least by our local standards. The park opens on May Day, May 1, and attracts a lot of people every year. There is a disco zone, a favorite meeting point of lots of young people from Stone Ford in summer. Charles Gascoigne is considered to be the founder of the city. He was appointed the first director of the iron foundry from which the city sprang. He was its director from 1795 till 1806. You can see a medal in his honor at the city history and culture museum (on the picture) and read about his life and work at one of the exhibits of the museum in Karl Marx Street (former Kazan Street). It is interesting to note that many streets in Old Russia were called after Kazan, the Tatar capital, to commemorate the historic Russian victory in the centuries-old struggle between the Tatars and the Russians. The British tank MK-V (Mark-V) was manufactured in the United Kingdom in 1917-1918. About 400 tanks were manufactured. During the Civil War of 1918-1922 such tanks were supplied for General Denikin’s White Guards Army that fought against the Bolsheviks in Russia. All in all 60 tanks were delivered to Russia, among them 30 tanks were taken as trophies by the Red Army. Now only five such tanks are left in the world: two in Luhansk, one in Kharkiv, one in Moscow region one in Archangelsk in the north of Russia. Even Great Britain, the manufacturer of this tank, does not possess any of such tanks now. Now these tanks have been included into the state register of the monuments of national significance. Robert Thomas Scott from the British “Friends of Lincoln Tank” society has visited Luhansk and studied the conditions of Luhansk tanks. His conclusion is that these tanks are viable to restore, but it would cost 1.5 million dollars. Leave a Comment Address: Titov StreetDirections: Behind the local lore museum in Shevchenko Street
