    Rejuvenation of Poplars

by hunterV Updated Mar 27, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I haven’t noticed this tradition in the past century. Perhaps because the poplars were not so big twenty years ago.
There are a lot of huge poplars along many streets in Rubizhne. Their massive branches can be a nuisance for the traffic, for pedestrians and for the apartment houses in case they break and fall during a storm.
So they cut down the crowns of poplars in winter and call it rejuvenation.
Don’t be shocked to see the stumps standing lonely along the main streets.
I am not an expert, but I would say the trees look ridiculous afterwards.
However, the big danger of falling branches is removed this way.

    Exhibitions of Handicrafts

by hunterV Updated Feb 2, 2015

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It was great to visit a handicrafts exhibition at the city museum on the eve of International Women's Day.
The exhibition was called Ornaments of Love.
It contained a lot of embroidered towels, shirts, blouses and icons.
Most of all I liked Orthodox icons embroidered by handicraft specialists.
The exhibition was assembled and brought to Rubizhne by Red Thread Embroidery Lovers Club from the neighboring city of Syeverodonetsk.

    Photography As a Passion

by hunterV Updated Dec 3, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As far as I know, there have been lots of ardent photographers in Rubizhne.
Eugene Alexandrov was an outstanding city photographer whose works are kept in the city museum now.
My two photo album dedicated to Rubizhne are also exhibits of the city museum.
I made them in 1978-1980 and last year presented them to the museum.
I took my first color pictures with Smena 8M camera that I had received as a birthday present from my parents once.
In 2008 I decided to take them to the museum that is now accumulating its exhibits for the future exhibitions.
There are five color pictures among my first color photography endeavors.
    Here they are:
    - Picture 1: New apartment houses are being built.
    - Picture 2: Bohdan Khmelnitsky Street, Rubizhne, 1978
    - Picture 3: My secondary school, Students Street, 1978
    - Picture 4: At the entrance to the central market, Rubizhne
It was a very quiet square at that time, not like now.
It is very crowded and full of shops and kiosks now.
    - Picture 5: The war memorial in Kirov Avenue.

This is how they often call the beach at Lake Sandy in Rubizhne. Locals also call this lake simply Vodnaya (“Water Station”).
It so happens that this beach is the first beach of Luhansk region to get a certificate/permit for providing vacation services for city residents.
The waters of this lake are said to be very clean, unlike hundreds of other ponds and lakes that have long been polluted.
Please take a look at Beach in Rubizhne
As of June 1, 2013, the city beach at this lake was the only one out of the 22 official public beaches of the entire Luhansk region that was certified by the State Sanitary Inspection that is inexorable in the issues of public health.
The beach has a volleyball grounds, mini-football grounds and badminton grounds.
The kids enjoy riding a banana glide, sports grounds and merry-go-rounds.
In other words, the local holidaymakers get everything they need for active rest, as it were.
You can get to the beach by bus 109, if you get off at its final stop, and then walk along Kharkiv Street for about 30 minutes or simply take a taxi, which may cost you UAH20-30.
    Fun at the Lake
    The First Beach (Boss’ Interview).
After the holiday season is over, you can still enjoy a fine day at the lake, if you wish to have a bath and to sit at the cafe. There s a side entrance located to the left of the beach building. You only have to make a reservation beforehand.

    On a Large Scale

by hunterV Written Nov 20, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Chemical Industry Day has long been a traditional and popular celebration in Rubizhne, even though the huge chemical enterprise barely breathes its last. Dye chemical corporation was a huge aniline production enterprise in Soviet times. This is where my parents used to work.
This festival is observed on the last weekend of May.
It would be a lucky time for your visit to Rubizhne.
A gala meeting is held at the city leisure center in the afternoon. In the evening there is a large holiday program: a concert dedicated to chemical workers, sports competitions for kids and teenagers, and a fair.
The holiday program ends with a young people’s disco and a fireworks display that attracts hundreds and hundreds of people every year.

Then the participants lay a Garland of Glory and flowers to the foot of the Heroes Obelisk.

    Mendeleyev and Rubizhne

by hunterV Updated Nov 5, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Dimtry Mendeleyev visited the Donest Basin in 1888 during his research work, but Rubizhne did not exist then. He arrived to what is now Donets'k located about 100 miles to the south-west of Rubizhne, but also visited the coalmines in Lissichansk located 20 miles from Rubizhne.
Dmitry Mendeleyev visited the metallurgical factory and the coal mine built under the guidance of John Hughes, the British entrepreneur who had founded Donetsk. Mendeleyev said to John Hughes, “You have accomplished a feat. What used to be a desert became alive. The result is obvious, the success is complete, the opportunity has been proven by your business ".
He stayed in the Donets area for about three months - February, March and April of 1888 - and wrote a book afterwards. He called his book "Power Resting on the Banks of the Donets". Mendeleyev wrote, "In my trips about Donets Area I was struck by his inexhaustible riches that surpass everything seen before, not only in Russia but also in other parts of Europe and America that I had visited for the study of their industry. "
Honoring Dmitry Mendeleyev (1834-1907), the Father of the Russian Chemical science, who created the Periodical System of Chemical Elements, is another custom here.
You can see this monument to the Great Chemist (a bust) in Mendeleyev Street not far from the bus terminal opposite School 8.
Also, there is Mendeleyev monument in the old city park.
You can see a huge mural with a portrait (a bust) of Dmitry Mendeleyev on the second floor of the city leisure center.

    Attending a Liturgy

by hunterV Updated Nov 1, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's another tradition in Rubizhne, especially now that we have so many new churches and cathedrals.
The biggest cathedral is located in Lenin Street, one of the main streets of the city.
Holy Assumption Cathedral is located at 42 Lenin Street in Rubizhne.
Father Eugenius (Meletich) is the cathedral dean.
    Tel. +038 06453 7 83 12
The cathedral was built with white bricks manufactured by the local brick factory, which makes it different from many other new churches built with yellow bricks.
The cathedral's Feast Day is on August 28 every year.

    Young and Talented

by hunterV Written Oct 28, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In late March 2013, when I happened to stay with my parents, I was privileged to attend the performance of kids dance ensembles.
I was amazed how dance happy the kids are. There were a lot of wonderful dance groups and ensembles at the concert, among them Orlionok (“Eaglet”) merited dance ensemble, Crystal circus studio and many others.
Their activities are based at the city leisure center where a lot of school students from all over the city learn and perform folk dances and popular dances and then they take an active part in all city festivities.
However, I saw a big contrast between the performances of kids dance groups with their happy kids’ dances that were followed by “Big Business Dance Show” - the performance of “Fortuna” show ballet – a cowboy tavern style young ladies dance group.

I attended a beneficial performance of the People’s Musical Comedy Theater on march 30, 2013. It was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the theater.
