Political Commissar Memorial, Slavyanoserbsk
1 more image

Victory Day celebrations are among the most popular holidays of the year here.
There was bitter fighting here in 1943 during the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet Army won an important victory here.
The war veterans from all over the district gather at the motorway crossing at the foot of the Politruk Memorial (Political Commissar Memorial) erected in 1980 and dedicated to the heroic deed of Lieutenant Yeryomenko who led the soldiers into battle in this district in 1943 and died.
The monument looks very impressive from the motorway.
It became one of the symbols of Luhansk region too.
Political Commissars were propaganda officers and were present in every army unit during the war.

Slavyanoserbsk is known for its cathedral that survived the ruthless Stalin era: St.Stephen the First Martyr Cathedral that is being restored now.
The cathedral dates back to 1874.
During its renovation received the cathedral got new domes and was painted over on the outside.
There is still a lot of restoration work inside.
The public worship is held in spite of all difficulties.
Father Oleg, the cathedral dean, is doing a lot in this sphere.
The cathedral parish celebrates their cathedral holiday on the third day of Christmas, January 10, when St.Stephen's Day is observed.

Eternal Flame, Slavyanoserbsk

Like in many other big towns and cities, there is Eternal Flame in this town, too.
You can see black plaques with the names of the soldiers and officers who fell in the battles for the liberation of Slavyanoserbsk in 1943.
The war memorial is located in the town park behind the Lenin Monument opposite the building of the State District Administration.
People come to this monument on Victory Day on May 9 every year to lay flowers and hold a requiem meeting dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Wold War II.
