    Explore the City Restaurants

    by hunterV Updated Jul 19, 2014

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    There are several decent cafes and restaurants in the city: Yermak, Nika and Gourmand where you will enjoy the cuisine and the not-too-high prices.
    Why not try some of them during your stay?
    Also, there are also small bistro next to the central supermarkets where you can also sit and relax, if you don't mind plastic tables and chairs.

    Marvel at the City Monuments

    by hunterV Updated Jul 19, 2014

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    There are several unique monuments in the city, among them Stakhanov Memorial in Irmino (formerly Teplogorsk);
    Afghan War Memorial near the central market bus stop;
    Maxim Gorky monument near the city conference center;
    Eternal Flame war memorial near the city council;
    different memorial plaques at the buildings.
    Unlike many other Afghan War memorials I have seen, the memorial in Stakhanov provides a lot of detailed and appalling information on that terrible war.
    The inscription on the Afghan War memorial in Stakhanov reads,
    /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
    Within the years of war - December 25, 1979 till February 15, 1989 -
    546,255 military took part in that war, among them 14,453 KIA,
    53,753 wounded, 292 MIA and 15,000 became disabled.
    /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

    Seventy-one soldiers and officers were awarded with the honorary title of the Hero of the Soviet Union, 25 servicemen got that title posthumously.
    Twelve residents of Stakhanov died in that war. You can read their full names and dates of their life. They were mostly privates, no officers among them.

    Visiting the Eternal Flame

    by hunterV Updated Jul 19, 2014

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Like in many Ukrainian cities, there is Eternal Flame in Stakhanov too. It is located in the city council park. The memorial is dedicated to the heroes of all wars.
    You can see a statue of the Mourning Motherland at the front part of the obelisk. She is holding a wreath to commemorate the fallen heroes.
    You can also see Cups of Sorrow with military orders above them on three other sides of the Glory Obelisk. The cups of sorrow symbolize people's tears shed for the fallen heroes.
    They can be turned into words - the famous Soviet saying about the war heroes, Nobody is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!

    by hunterV Updated Jul 19, 2014

    The city movie theater is called Mir ("Peace").
    It is a sample of the Stalin era Empire style.
    It was built in 1935 for the coalminers and their families to relax after a hard working day.
    The movie theater is located next to the city conference center called Gorky Palace of Culture.
    The movie theater became a real city club. Now it is an entertaining complex.
    There is a 24/7 cafe bar, a cocktail bar that is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and a VIP Dance Club.
    There are special shows and guest performances there. This is a high end place for those who can afford it.
    The dance club starts working at 10 p.m. There are entrance fees. The inscription at the entrance reads, Free entrance for young ladies in glamorous attire from 10 till 11 p.m.

    Why not visit the city park, especially in hot summer weather?
    You can have breakfast starting from 10 a.m. at Nika cultural and entertainment center (Tellman Street) and walk further to the attractions area and sit at the bar near the fountain.
    There is also a cafe next door and a restaurant in a nearby building.
    At night there are discos at Nika where a lot of young people gather together to have fun.
    Sometimes there are fashion shows or live concerts there.
    The park is exceptionally clean and cozy and you can spend a couple of enjoyable hours there...
    You can also go to the city pond built in 1968 and walk around it or sit on the shore and ponder...

    Viewing the Stakhanov Memorial

    by hunterV Updated Oct 1, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    There is a very unusual coalminers' memorial in Irmino (formerly Teplogorsk) District dedicated to Alexey Stakhanov's labor record.
    Irmino (former Teplogorsk - "Warm Mountain Town") used to be a separate satellite town of Stakhanov.
    It was incorporated into the city of Stakhanov later as an administrative district.
    The Stakhanov memorial stands right above the place where he set his world record in 1935.
    I found the memorial to be very special and impressive indeed.
    You can see a big air hammer with the year 1935 on the pedestal.
    The inscription on the memorial reads,
    /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

    Relax at the Sauna!

    by hunterV Updated May 6, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    After your long tiresome city tour you could go to one of the city's saunas and enjoy your stay there.
    I know one decent sauna at 1B Ossipenko Street.
    It is called Fortune and offers you two halls: one, a bigger one, with jakuzi.
    They also have a bar a Russian billiards.
    One hour relaxation at the sauna would cost you about $10.
    There are also private saunas in the city. One of them is at 68 Gorky Street. It has to be reserved beforehand.
    Have fun!

    Discover the City Architecture!

    by hunterV Updated Apr 15, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Walking about the city or driving around it in a taxi, I stopped now and then to take a picture of some outstanding old and modern buildings.
    This is one of them: the civil registrar's office at 18 Dzerzhinsky Street where the marriage ceremonies are held.
    It looks very special and you can see at once it is very old and has its own legend...
    The house was built in 1886-1889 by the then coalmine's chief John Carradine.
    There are several historical buildings in Stakhanov, among them:
    - the old city council building;
    - Carradine’s House built in 1886-1889. The house used to belong to the coalmine’s owner John Carradine;
    - St.Nickolas Cathedral (built in 1870) in Chutino District.

    My friend and I enjoyed visiting the city park.
    First we went to Nika entertainment center where we could have breakfast and do people watching. There are so many young people there. They seem to be there rouind the clock.
    Then we took the ferris wheel and saw the beautiful panorama of the city from 20 m high.
    The park fountain is a meeting point of many people in Stakhanov.
