Toilet Paper
  • Tip Rating:
  • Typical Ukrainian toilet paper - Lviv
    Typical Ukrainian toilet paper
    by HORSCHECK

The standards of toilets in the Ukraine vary a lot. If you are lucky you might find clean and comfortable public toilets in bigger cities like Kiev or Lviv. But even here squat toilets can be seen quite often, also in restaurants or hotels.

Just be prepared that toilet paper for some reasons is only provided in very limited quantities, if at all. The provided paper is often more of the rough kind like the one
    shown on my photo.

So if your bottom prefers fluffy paper, you should bring your own paper and always be prepared to have some toilet paper with you.

A few needed things while going to Ukraina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mosquito Repellent would be usefull outside the cities

Take everything what you always needed to survive below conditions :)

Temperate continental.Mediterranean only on the southern Crimean coast; precipitation disproportionately distributed, highest in west and north, lesser in east and southeast; winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland; summers are warm across the greater part of the country, hot in the south

Toilet set would be great, there's no paper in public toilets.

    No problem with suplies.

Ukraine’s electrical current is 220/50 (volts/hz) and uses the plug adaptors listed below. Many North American appliances are designed to operate only within the 100-125 volt range. These appliances will suffer damage if plugged into 220-250 volts without the proper transformer or converter.

The time zone for Ukraine is 2 hours offset from GMT, so Imovane leave at home ;)

    Travel Guide
  • Tip Rating:
  • Like many other countries in Eastern Europe, the Ukraine is a rapidly developing country. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to find a Tourist Information Office or just a free map, therefore an up to date guide book for independent travellers is highly recommended.

On our first trip in 2007 we used the Bradt Travel Guide - Ukraine which covers all sorts of information from historical background and descriptions of the sights to practical information about public transportation, accomodation and restaurants.

In 2008 we used the new German travel guide Reise Know-How - Ukraine, der Westen which was just translated from the Polish version. Unfortunately it is not available in English.

    Free map of Lviv
  • Tip Rating:
  • During our first visit to Lviv in May 2007 we couldn't find any Tourist Information Office.

In May 2008 we found one by chance in the middle of Russka Street on the right side when coming from the Market Square.

They sell all sorts of souvenirs as well as several guidebooks and maps in various languages. Unfortunately they didn't have many free of charge brochures, except one Lviv map.

The map was very helpful as it also included a street index, little photos of the sights and the principal public transportation routes.

    Umbrella
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't forget your umbrella to Lviv. I got advice about some days in advance of my trips. One day it was cloudy but without rain but next day it was drizzling. But I heard that the city is one of the leaders in amount of raining in Ukraine

    A sleeping bag
Some guide books advise to take a sleeping bag, if you are going to stay in cheap Ukrainian hotels, as they provide just a blanet, not a quilt and in the rooms can be quite cold in the night. In the summer you won't need it for sure, but maybe during the winter it's resonable to take one.

    Soap and tissues!
Bring toilet roll and some extra pocket tissues. On trains, there will almost certainly be none! Also might be an idea to carry some soap, there are sinks but no soap. Can be annoying on long trips without such comforts.

    Toiletpaper, Toiletpaper and Toiletpaper
    Bring good walking shoes.

Bring all the tablets you need on your travel with you!! I had to get painkillers in LVIV. And they almost blow my head off. Far stronger than what I am used to!!

Bring some toiletpaper! There are toiletpaper some places. But it's rubbish. But you can find some toiletpapers in the markets. But they are full of perfume.

Bring batteries for your camera. Batteries there are crap!! They will work for two minuts!!
