    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 17, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The collection fund of association "Massandra" consists of three parts: museum, advertising-research and commercial. The museum fund represents greater value, and wines being there are unique. In museum fund there are several bottles of each name of wine every year production from among all being in the collection.

The museum fund is stored constantly. The advertising-research fund is created for studying changes in wines at their long storage in bottles; acquaintance of experts with processes of bottle ageing wines; for participation in auctions, exhibitions with the advertising purpose. The commercial fund is created for bottle endurance of wines not less than three years with the subsequent realization in their blossoming advantages.

The Massandra Collection, begun by Prince Golitsyn soon after the winery’s founding, contains examples of every vintage the winery has produced, as well as some European wines from the prince’s personal collection. Some of the rarities up for sale at the London auction include three half bottles of 1848 Paharet Sherry (estimated sale price 150-200 pounds) and 1895 Livadia “First Press” Liqueur Cabernet Sauvigion (estimated sale price 2,800-3,800 pounds per bottle).

The Massandra collection stores wines of age more than 230 years. The oldest wine is "the Sherry de-la Frontera” - a crop of 1775. In 2001 on Sotheby's auction it was sold for $50000.

    Prince L.S.Golitsyn and Winery history

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 17, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Prince L.S. Golitsyn who was appointed in 1891 on the post of the main wine maker of the Udel'ny department (the department of all grounds belonged to the Emperor had such a name in the Crimea and in the Caucasus), made a decision on construction of the underground winery of tunnel type. It was the first in Russia factory for manufacture and endurance of dining and sweet wines. After several years of searches, studying of different areas of the Crimea the construction began in Massandra in 1894.

By 1889 several manors with vineyards and cellars were bought up: “Livadia” (Pototsky's column), “Massandra” and "Ai-Danil" (M.S.Vorontsov's successors), and also the wine firm of S.M.Vorontsov with representations in Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov, Odessa, Simferopol and other cities.

In 1894 the well-known hydro geologist Golovkinsky selected a place for the main winery cellar. The project was developed by the architect V.N.Chagin. In 1898 the construction under direction of the engineer A.I.Didrich was completed. Taking into account that there were the first winery cellars of tunnel type which were similar only to the best facilities in France, it is possible to recognize Golitsyn's personal participation to be the solving. Only he could convince the Emperor to spend 1 million 100 thousand roubles. The result was following: 7 winery tunnels, missing in radiuses with general extent in 2 versts (about 3 kilometers), capacity of all winery flanks up to 80 thousand buckets (1 bucket =12,4 liters) and 1 million bottles.

Now it is totaled about one million bottles with really unique wines in the collection of wines "Massandra" incorporated by Golitsyn.

    Massandra Palace Park

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 17, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Designed as an imitation of a romantic castle on the Loire River, the Palace with its bright looks was to reflect and merge harmoniously with the southern nature. The Massandra palace is surrounded with a small, but lovely garden. It is a masterpiece of landscape architecture.

The palace park has a picturesque fountain and set like in French Versailles. The combination of the palace and park make a wonderful ensemble.
No one can stay indifferent to the beauty of this place! The sea, the sky, all the nature – it looks like everything is trying to make you happy and calm.
Stroll around the lovely palace garden and enjoy the views of The Crimean Mountains and the Black Sea on a distance! All the beauties created by human beings can hardly be compared with those, created by nature.

We have been there in January. It's deep winter in the Crimea. Though the weather wasn't good that day - it was raining - we enjoyed walking along park alleys. The beautiful Palace and park were really worth visiting!

    The palace - Stalin's and Brezhnev’s Dacha

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 16, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: For more then a hundred years of its existence the Massandra palace served as a place for relaxation during mountainous walks, later as a residence for the VIP.
In Soviet time for many years this beautiful architectural monument was the closed for ordinary people object.

I have been to Yalta several times but never heard about it. Now I know why!
The palace is also known as Stalin's Dacha. In tsar's Palace, that became the state cottage, the party and government leaders stopped there to rest. That’s why we could only read in Soviet newspapers “There had been a meeting of the General Secretary of the CPSU Leonid Iliych Brezhnev with the leader of Communist Party … in Yalta”.
Now I know that these meetings took place in the Massandra Palace.

    The Massandra Palace History

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 16, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The Massandra palace has a strange history. The Palace was started to being built in 1881 under the order of the famous General Governor of Novorossia grand duke S.M.Vorontsov. But he died a year later.

In 1889 Massandra estate of Vorontsovs together with the uncompleted Palace was bought for the emperor Alexander the Third. In 3 years the Palace building was finished. The palace was intended to be a residence of Alexander III and became a kind of a hunter's house for the august family of Nicholas II. By the end of its construction the last Russian emperor was already fond of the idea to build his new residence in Livadia and took no interest in the Massandra palace.

But unfortunately Alexander the Third also had no chance to live there. He died in 1894 in the Small Livadia Palace. The Romanovs visited Massandra only to hold picnics, favouring its splendid garden with rocks, rock shelters and springs.

THE PALACE OF ALEXANDER THE THIRD

    by Kuznetsov_Sergey Updated Mar 16, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: At the east entrance to Yalta in Upper Massandra there is one of the best architectural monuments of the Southern Coast of Crimea. It is the Palace of Emperor Alexander the Third.

Massandra palace is one of the most famous landmarks in Yalta. It reminds something fantastic by its beauty and prettiness. Turrets of a palace can be seen in two kilometers among huge cedars and cypresses. It was built by the slopes of the mountain ridge in the lonely place surrounded by the wood.

The initial design in style of Louis XIII was made by the French architect Bouchar. Later the palatial complex was completed by the Russian architect professor Maximillian Meismacher. In Massandra abundant ornamentation, details of a Renaissance style and newly born art nouveau style can be found. However, the dominant feature is its baroque style.
