    Sevastopol'-The Obelisk in
    honor of the Hero-City
    by Kuznetsov_Sergey
The country has called the Black Sea fortress a hero-city. The glory of Sevastopol became actually world-wide.

Both during the Nazi occupation and in the bright hour of liberation that came in May, 1944, Sevastopolites remained true to the motto inscribed on the city's first monument: to live up to "the example for the posterity".

The monuments to defenders and liberators of Sevastopol, to partisans and underground fighters are a tribute to their feat that will endure through the ages. The Obelisk in honor of the Hero-City of Sevastopol is installed on the Cape Khrustalny.

The legendary Sapun-Gora through which the way to the liberation of Sevastopol in 1944 lay has become the place of homage to the heroes. In the same year 1944 the first monuments to the Soviet warriors on this war-scorched land were erected, in 1959 the diorama showing the triumphant assault of the enemy fortifications was opened.

I was fortune to see it in 1967 when a boy. This 2007 we hadn't got enough time to revisit the diorama.

A steam locomotive AL-2500 with an inscription "Death to fascists " is installed on eternal parking near to the railroad station. During defense it drove in fight a legendary armored train "Gheleznjakov" which was constructed by workers of the Sevastopol sea factory in November, 1941.

4 ship guns, 6 mortars and 14 machine guns were installed on the armored train. The staff has been completed by sailors from the fighting ships of the Black Sea fleet. Fascists named an armored train "A green phantom". It made 140 fighting spot-checks into a first line of fights. "Gheleznjakov" caused true panic at hitlerites. After each spot-check it was covered in the tunnel where was almost inaccessible to enemy batteries and aircraft.

    Malahov's barrow

Malakhov barrow may not possibly strictly impress you on its outward appearance. It looks like an ordinary hill. But, having occupied a predominant position above Korabelnaya Storona, it had become a key position during the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. Loss of the barrow had been a cause of the outcome of Sevastopol 349 days defense.

At the head of the chief path, on a small ground of a barrow, there is a common grave. There lie bodies of Russian and French fighting men who had been killed in the last battle on Malakhov barrow in August 27, 1855.

During passed war years the monument had been wrecked. It was restored in 1960 according to A.L.Sheffer's project.

Sevastopol’ has long since been known all over the world as the city of the Russian naval glory as a firm stronghold in the South of Russia. Its name which translated from the Greek means "majestic", "worthy of admiration" has been justified by the whole more than two-century-long history of the city.

The history of Sevastopol inseparably connected with that of the Black Sea Fleet was being shaped out and enriched by the feats of the Russian sailors. It was no accident that the city's and Fleet's chronicle at the earliest period had to its credit the names of the illustrious Russian naval commanders - Ushakov, Lazarev, Kornilov, Nakhimov.

The Crimean war began in 1854 as a result of long saved economic and political contradictions between England, France, Turkey, Sardinia and Russia. Each of these countries aspired to strengthen the influence on the Middle East to win the markets of selling to subordinate to itself new territories. However the Ottoman empire to this time was significantly weakened and was unable to achieve a success. Turkish suffered defeats on land and by the sea. In November of 1853 Russian squadron under commanding of the vice-admiral Nakhimov raided in Sinop bay a Turkish squadron. It was a great Russian victory!

In September of 1854 English - French fleet arrived to Sevastopol. Knowing, that the city is well protected from the sea, the opponent has landed large descent to the south from Eupatorium to approach to Sevastopol from a land. The city was announced state of siege. The defense proceeding 349 days was begun. We call it “The First Sevastopol Defence”. Thousands of Russian soldiers were killed there but have not conceded to the enemy.

In October of 1941 the second defence against fascists began. We call it “The Second Sevastopol Defence” It proceeded 250 days till July of 1942. Hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers were killed there but have not conceded to the enemy.

That’s why many people consider Sevastopol as the city of the Russian glory.

There are some nice parks by the bay which are very popular recreation spots with the locals. Have drink in an open air cafe in summer and enjoy the view of the sea. I really liked walking along the promenade enjoying the seaside and the views.

  • I took the time to see Dr Kotov in Sevastopol. The dental clinic is called Dr Siemens and can be found on Lenina Street. I talked with Dr. Kotov who speaks good English He
uses Siemans Procedures, as good as or better than you can get in the UK. In fact he had better equiment than my local dentist, and of course he uses the german 'Siemens' equipment.. The cost was really cheap..

    A brighter and whiter smile...

  • Ruins of the city of Chersonese Taurica (Taurian Peninsula), located in the western part of Sevastopol on the Heraclian Peninsula. In 5-1 B.C. Chersonese was a city-state with democratic self-government. In 3-2 B.C. the first defense structures consisting of 24 towers were built. More than 30 streets and a large number of gardens were in the city. The city center contains an acropolis and an agora (place of public meetings), a theater, and a temple. During the lst-4th c. Chersonese became an aristocratic republic under the control of Rome. Later it fell under Byzantine rule and in the 4th c. converted to Christianity. In 988 Prince Volodymyr the Great captured Chersonese. In 1299 it was captured and destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols.
