Sevastopol'-The Obelisk in honor of the Hero-City by Kuznetsov_Sergey The country has called the Black Sea fortress a hero-city. The glory of Sevastopol became actually world-wide. Both during the Nazi occupation and in the bright hour of liberation that came in May, 1944, Sevastopolites remained true to the motto inscribed on the city's first monument: to live up to "the example for the posterity". The monuments to defenders and liberators of Sevastopol, to partisans and underground fighters are a tribute to their feat that will endure through the ages. The Obelisk in honor of the Hero-City of Sevastopol is installed on the Cape Khrustalny. The legendary Sapun-Gora through which the way to the liberation of Sevastopol in 1944 lay has become the place of homage to the heroes. In the same year 1944 the first monuments to the Soviet warriors on this war-scorched land were erected, in 1959 the diorama showing the triumphant assault of the enemy fortifications was opened. I was fortune to see it in 1967 when a boy. This 2007 we hadn't got enough time to revisit the diorama.

Sevastopol' - View from Malahov's barrow by Kuznetsov_Sergey Malakhov barrow may not possibly strictly impress you on its outward appearance. It looks like an ordinary hill. But, having occupied a predominant position above Korabelnaya Storona, it had become a key position during the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. Loss of the barrow had been a cause of the outcome of Sevastopol 349 days defense. At the head of the chief path, on a small ground of a barrow, there is a common grave. There lie bodies of Russian and French fighting men who had been killed in the last battle on Malakhov barrow in August 27, 1855. During passed war years the monument had been wrecked. It was restored in 1960 according to A.L.Sheffer's project.
