Primorsky Boulevard

Favorite thing: The famous staircase with the 192 marches duct in top of the harbor instead Richelieu. The monument is in the middle of a big semicircular place. Of the two sides of the place, a shady alley, the Primorsky boulevard, takes place in the same way in Meereslinie, more or less 50 meters to the over of the surface of the sea.

Arcadia beach

Favorite thing: I had, on this beach of Arcadia, in Odessa, an unpleasant illustration of the name of the Black Sea : Why the black Sea ?
Is this because of the dirt of water in Odessa, and do all floating objects non identified who swim between two waters ?

Arcadia beach

Favorite thing: The beaches are nearly all situated to the south of Odessa.
Arcadia is to 1:30 march of the Chevtchenko park, or at 45 min. to the maritime station by boat blows when it functions. The terminus of the tram N° 5 is in Arcadia, and it remained the means the more sure and efficient to return himself of it.

Primorsky boulevard

Favorite thing: The famous Potemkine staircase, with its 192 marches duct in top of the harbor places Richelieu. The duke's statue is in the middle of a big semicircular place. Of the two sides of the place, a shady alley, the Primorsky boulevard, takes place in the same way in Meereslinie, more or less to 50 meters to the over of the sea level.

Because of the numerous magnificent buildings, the Primorsky boulevard is in Odessa kicks it the more beautiful and largely free of automotive circulation. Northbound, it begins with the ruins of the palace of summer of the Count Woronzow. Woronzow was of 1823 until 1844 governor of Russia of the South and also had beautiful palaces in other places, for example in Crimea.

The small, but very fine, Londonskaya hotel and the palace of the sailors hold the half of the south of the Primorsky boulevard. It ends, to the south, on the Puschkin place in front of the palace of the government of the city..

The Golden Child - Ernst Neizvestny

Favorite thing: On the harbor, before the entry of the maritime station, facing the terminal of the travelers, you won't be able to miss this charming sculpture of bronze to the rounded shapes. I think that it is very "Zen", a lot of "Yang" with its soft and round shapes. Ukrainian people names this sculpture "A child is newborn".

This sculpture is The Golden Child - sculptor Ernst Neizvestny

Fondest memory: The Odessant's bindioujnik, always slanderous say that this sculpture to cost very dear... "worse that Krik Benia"

Don Josef de Ribas

Don Josef de Ribas

Favorite thing: In the war of 1787-91, Don Josef de Ribas, a soldier of fortune born in Naples of Spanish and Irish stock and one of many adventures in Catherine's service, stormed the fortress of Yeny-Dunai at Khadzhibei. Catherine the Great apparently considered making the port of Ochakov, near the mouth of the Boh river, the effective capital of Novorossiya. But Ochakov lacked a good natural harbour. On the other hand, de Ribas and a close collaborator, a Dutch engineer named Franz de Volan, recommended Khadzhibei as the site of the region's principal port. Its harbour was deep and nearly ice-free. Breakwaters, on the model of those found at Naples, Livorno and Ancona, could be cheaply constructed and would render the harbour safe even for large fleets.

The Potemkin Stairs

The Potemkin Stairs on the first part of XXth

Favorite thing: The Potemkin Stairs are a formal entrance into the city from the direction of the sea. Sure, each city has it own place of mostly pronounced originality. For Odessa, no doubt, it will be Potemkin Stairs. The stairs leading from Prymorsky Boulevard down to the sea were constructed from 1837 through 1841 to the design of the architect F. Bofford. This imposing monument numbers 192 stairsarranged in ten flights and flanked by two-metre thick parapets. The difference in width between the highest (13.4 m) and the lowest (21.6 m) flights produces an optical illusion that enhances the grandeur of the structure. Originally, the stairs were faced with grey Trieste sandstone. With time, however, the sandstone weathered and was replaced with granite.

The famous Potemkin Stairs serve as a symbol of the city. It has recently been complemented with ramp overbridges to extend as far as the Novy Pier, where a modern structure of the new seaport is located on a high platform. Memorial plagues state that it was on precisely this spot that the first Odessa buildings were founded in 1794.

Suvorov Memorial

Suvorov Memorial

Favorite thing: Memorial erected on the site of a bastion of the earthen fortress The grounds of the present-day stadium were once the site of a fortress surrounded by an earthen rampart. It was built in 1793 to the plan eleborated by the engineer F. Devollan and approved by A. Suvorov, who at that time was entrusted with the defence of the Southern Russia. In 1891, one of the fortress bastions was replaced by a granite column to the design of the architect N. Barinov. It was reconstructed in 1978 and a memorial plaque was attached featuring a bas-relief representation of A. Suvorov, the great Russian military commander.
