Entering Shevchenko Park

Shevchenko park is the location of the tomb of the unknown sailor. It is large and mostly kept-up. The memorial has sea cadets guarding it most days they have classes. It is fun to watch them march to and from the memorial when they change guards hourly. They aren't always dead serious about it! But they are well drilled.
It is not far from the city centre and is located adjacent to the Odessa Port Terminal. It is a good place to stroll, watch people, watch terminal activities and look out over the Black Sea and count freighters as they come to and from Odessa and the Crimea.

Main Level of Marine Terminal
4 more images

Odessa Sea Terminal is located across the street from the Potemkin Stairs. The terminal houses the Hotel Odessa and a convention, expo centre. Also on site are memorial to sailors lost at sea and a statue of the woman and child waiting for their sailor to return home. There are several bars and restaurants on the quay. Beautiful views and opportunity to take short boat trips around harbour and toward Arcadia Beach for just a couple of dollars US, per person. One can also take ferry to Crimea in summer months from here.
This is best place to view coast around Odessa and to watch the harbor work going on. Nice place to relax.

Arcadia Beach looking North

This is where to go to dip into the Black Sea, sip a drink with a beautiful vista, eat at a restaurant with local or foreign cuisine, disco or just sit and people watch.
Take tram 8 or 9 from city centre, end of line is at Arcadia Beach. Get off and stroll down to beach. Pedestrian avenue is lined with kiosks selling food and drink and chatchkies. Street vendors selling everything from cigarettes to paintings line this avenue also. Beachfront has bars, restaurants and discos. Food one can buy ranges from ever-present sashlik kiosks to Japanese cuisine.
Not garish or Disneylandesque. Beach accomodations range from bring-your-own to pampered, if you want to pay for it. I enjoyed this area so much I visited it four times in my fortnight stay in Odessa.

Unique Building

Do not miss the visiting of Philharmonic House, and watching the beautiful architecture style, which distinguish Odessa from Kiev, and other Ukrainian cities. By the way this building was in the old history the Stock Market of the city.

Potemkin Steps

You must go see the Potemkin steps and the whole area downtown. There is lots to see and do just walking around close to the city center. Check out the city center market with souviners and trinkets. There is lots t see if you want to go farther on foot and walk along the beaches. The whole city is an experience.

Detail of the Passage

The Passage was built in the end of the 19. century as a hotel and a shopping center. This combination was at that time quite common in European cities. Both hotel and shopping center still exist today, but both have seen more glorious times in the past.

The Archeological museum and its coin-collection

Near the Opera House you find the worth-seeing Archeological Museum. It houses a very important collection of ancient coins that can be seen only together with a museum-guide. The museum even provides some English titles!

In front of the Museum you can see a copy of the famous Vaticanian Laokoon-sculpture.

The Opera House...

Detail of the Opera House

...was constructed by the famous viennese theater-architect-duo Helmer & Fellner. The foundation stone was laid in 1884, the inauguration was three years later.

The facade is horseshoe-shaped with an arched gateway over the hall. The reason for the horseshoe-shape are the 20 emergency exits arranged around the auditorium so that in case of fire everyone has nearly the same way and enough space to get out.

When I was there in August 2004, due to restoration works I was not able to get in, but I saw pictures....I just can advise you to get in or even see an opera if you have the chance!!

Statue of duke Emmanuel Richelieu

.... you reach the statue of duke Emmanuel Richelieu. He was a relative to the famous Cardinal Richelieu in France.

The duke in 1803 fled because of the French Revolution to Russia. The zar Alexander III. made him mayor of Odessa. He ruled for 11 years before he went back to France after the reconstruction of the monarchy. Under Louis XVI. he then was twice minister president.

His work can today still be seen in Odessa. He imported trees from the south of Italy and from France to fill the avenues of Odessa. The reason was that these trees didn't / don't need much water and the shortage of water by that time was already known.

Furthermore the first theater was build under his reign and he supported summer-stages.

Girls posing in front of the Potjomkin-steps

Designed by the French architect Boffo, who lived in Odessa for a long time and buildings of whom you find all over the city.

It was constructed as main entry to the city center and used to led directly to the sea. When the harbour was built, 8 steps were cut and the street in front of the steps was constructed.

It now has 192 steps and a length of 142 meters. An interesting fact is that they have double width on the bottom. That gives the imagination that they are bigger than they are.
