The problem of the thieves that searches you the pockets without shame is world. In Odessa, numerous strips share the "market". But it is no more no less only elsewhere. It is the opportunity for me to give back "my tricks" 1 never sign conspicuous that you are tourists ! 2 some portfolio exists, or of the purse, provide a chain (5 to 10 Euros on any market). It is a good means to dissuade the thieves (the chain is visible). 3 not to put all his money in the same place, and to separate banking cards, species, checkbook... 4 in the public transportation, not to remain to the middle, but always to get back to a baffle (or seated). Not to wait in the front for the embankment (ever no one behind you). 5 Conspicuous steps of sign of wealth in the tourist places. 6 to avoid to remain immobile in a tail or in the street. Although Odessa is well known for its legends of mafia and robberies, I think the best days of criminals are in the past in this city. And mostly it is just a trend (first mafia in Soviet Union) Odessa uses to attract people. So, you will not have any problems like that (but it is wise not to walk in the dark). But you should be very serious of picketpocketing. This is a real problem as we have heard. We also heard that fortune tellers at Potemkin steps may use hypnosis to you and you will give all your money to them at free will. It's up to you to believe to these stories (there are plenty of them in ex-Soviet Union) or not, but I would strongly recommend you not to have any deal with them. Just say to them you are not interested in fortune telling and go away.

Be wary of purse snatchers and pickpocketers. Odessa has always been renowned for its skilled pickpocketers who tend to lurk around Privoz and other crowded areas. By the way the picture does not represent pickpocketeres, just a picture displaying privoz clientele. Leave a Comment

Beware of organised police checks on passports, if you don't have yours handy or at least a copy, you could well find yourself in the cells or you'll have to loosen your purse strings and magically the paperwork disappears. Leave a Comment

I did not have any problems but just be careful if walking alone at night, many dark places even main streets just a few blocks from city center. Also watch were you walk, I saw many large holes in the sidewalks at night this is even worse. Would not want to break a leg.
