Kelemen Mikes (1690–1761)

by csordila

He was the "Hungarian Goethe", made famous by his Letters from Turkey. With these, he is regarded as one of the first Hungarian prose authors. He was born in Zágon and grew up in Covasna County, Romania. He fought the Habsburg until being forced to flee to the Ottoman Empire. While in Tekirdað, where he lived in exile with the Transylvanian Prince Ferenc Rákóczi, Mikes completed and published his essays. After Rákóczi's death in 1735, he stayed in exile until his own death.

Unknown Pleasure

by chiefbill

I just returned from Dnepropetrovs'k Ukraine and had the most wonderful time. This is not the usual tourist destination, but a very beautiful and interesting place to see. You can stroll along the Dneper River, visit the opera, enjoy Shevchenko Park and take in the natural beauty of the city and the people. Very affordable place to visit. The mornings along Karl Marks Prospect are peaceful and pleasant. The birds singing and the green trees along the street are such a joy to walk along. I stayed in a very nice apartment just across from Shevchenko Park provided by Chris Campling at travel2sevastopol.com. They provided transfers to and from the airport. I was greeted at the airport by Natalia, a very nice lady, who told me if I needed anything just call. Chris and Natalia are great people and really helped with all my needs in Ukraine. I am going to plan another visit to this wonderful...

Outside Big Cities

by hunterV

Outside all big cities there is usually so called green belt consisting of woods and forests. There is such a green belt in Luhansk too. It is called Ostraya Mogila state reserve or a forest-park as we call it. Its total area is 86 hectar. It contains lots of woods, different ravines, streams and forest glades nice for a picnic or a barbeque. This park attracts lots of residents of the city who prefer this area to others and have a good time here. It's a pity many visitors behave like savages leaving lots of litter after their stay in the woods...Location: southern part of Luhansk, Ostraya Mogila, Medical Compound on the way to the airport to the right (tram #6, buses # 152, 187, 197, 170, 121, 138, 151).

mountains

by zacisze13

Dear Maciek,Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is exactly what I was trying to say. I actually was trying to find it on the maps but could not because I was not translating to making it look like Wierchnoje Sinevidnoye. So you are saying take a train from Stryj to Mukaczewo to get to Synowodzko???? Are those trains run frequently? What elevation are we talking there? Beskidy Skolskie Range-how tall are those mountains? You seem to have a great knowledge of that region. Are you in it?Take care,Beata

Visit Kiev's Chernobyl Museum

by Greatwalk0

Kiev's Chernobyl Museum is an interesting (yet tragic) afternoon. The museum, while small, does an excellent job of documenting the tragic events of April 26, 1986. While one can pay for guided tours of the Chernobyl site itself -- located about 100 KM north of Kiev -- the museum is probably safer.Hours of Operation = 10:00 AM - 6:00 PMNote - the Chernobyl Museum is NOT open on Sundays.

CHERNIVTSY, capital of Bukovina

by lotharlerch

CHERNIVTSY, capital of the Bukovina, a little in the shadow of L'viv, an interesting multicultural mix in a frame reminding of a Vienna in a nutshell. See also my Chernivtsy page.KAMENETS-PODILSKI, maybe one of the most interesting sights in the whole country, a great fortified city with Polish, Ukrainian, Armenian, Turkish and even Soviet traces.BAKHTCHISSARAY on Crimea peninsula, the former capital of the Tatar khanate, nice palace of the khan and interesting cave cities (Chufut Kaleh for example) nearby in a nice landscape. The CRIMEAN COAST outside of the immediate surroundings of Yalta with the interesting multicultural YEVPATORIA and the former Genuese forts along the eastern Crimean coast.

Vylkove; Venice Of Ukraine

by Enzyme_X

This town on the far south of Ukrain, on the border with Romania in the Danube river delta was surely the most interesting place we visited in Ukraine. It seem that in this town, crisscrosed by canals, where the most important vehicle is boat, time stopped long ago. Walk along along canals, take care not to fall into one, or take a boat tour around the place. See how people are living with and in the waters that surround them.My Vylkove Page

The fortress of Belgorod-Dnestro

by Mique

The story of how i got to this fortress i'll tell sometime in a travelogue. It is a slight case of misunderstanding. But i did get here. And it is a marvellous fortress. Big medieval walls, 2 rings of defense without counting the moat. And the defense castle itself with the almost intact 4 tours is enough to satisfy even my appetite for castles. and the best thing of all, you're allowed to climb on every wall or tower provided you can get off again by yourself too. No restrictions. And for the people who feel tempted one can also try his or her hand at several medieval sports. A very good daytrip from Odessa. Marschrutka 560 or 561 i think. You'll find them on the lefthand side of the station and they will take you to the station in Belgorod. From there it is about 15 minutes walking to the fortress

Tarass Chevtchenko
