  • Bring your mobile phone and charger, as ukraine sim cards are quite cheap to buy.
I found the UMC 'Jeans' pay as you go the best... cost about $10 for a start up kit and free credits...

On this photo you can see national Ukraine currency = 1 grivnyi. On this side you can see Vladimir Velikiy grand duke of Kiev Russia. This is a small monetary unit, you can pay 2 tickets on tram. ))

Cash vs ATMs: you can bring along your ATM cards if you are travelling to major cities (Kiev, Lviv, for example). Besides the relative safety this offers, it will also help you to avoid huge commissions that are often charged by foreign exchange buros (and by the companies converting travellers' cheques into cash, alas, as well). Shops are also gradually starting to accept cards. However, if you go to a small resort town (or a town with nothing but one sightseeing object) in Crimea, you should take cash - just no ATMs there, I am afraid.

Bags are being packed regularly in Ukraine. In my travels I met a number of people who I would to some degree call friends. I recently began to think of what became of those people and with a few exceptions almost all have moved elswhere....places like Argentina, Spain, Germany and United States.

Since my travels, I have been assured that conditions in Ukraine are quite different in present day. In all, it was a wonderfull country and the people could not have been more kind or helpfull.

  • The climate of the country is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls everywhere except the south. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -20 Centigrade in the north to -3-5 in the south. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.

  • Rapid temperature drops are common so warm clothing is necessary even on hot summer days.

Bring your own anti-septic hand-showerstuff, because the toilets are not always very clean.
Bring a medicine-card (if needed f.e. for insuline).
The only things i take with me are: antidiarria- and stomic tablets and anti-insectstick

    Voltage is 220.
Batteries are availbale but not always good quality. Single-used cameras are not known

The mountains provide great opportunities for winter sports.

A stable snow cover is found from the beginning of December until the end of March at mid elevations, while the mountain tops are snow covered from October to May. Avalanches are common, particularly in Chornohora, Svidovets and the Gorgany.
Knowledge and experience in mountain travel is necessary to minimize the risk.

    Bring Lots of Cash

  • Make sure you bring plenty of cash when traveling to Ukraine. A lot of places don't take credit cards, and there are few ATM machines. Exchange your cash for Ukrainian money in the little kiosks you find everywhere.

  • The standard electric voltage in Ukraine is 220 volts. If you bring electric appliances, be sure to take a plug adapter and a surge protector.

    Pack Food and Cash

  • Pack light. A bag you can carry plus a backpak. It's good to carry a small day pack to make daily walking easier while touring on foot or by bus. A money belt and/or under the shirt, round-the-waist or round-the-neck passport wallet will protect these from pickpockets. Carry lots of cash from your own country, such as American dollars or British pounds. Americans: carry lots of One-dollar bills for tips or to bargain with street vendors. Travelers cheques were only exchanged at banks in my experience. None of the shops would accept them, only accepted cash. Keep your cash and travelers cheques in 2 or 3 different places under your clothing. If one stash is stolen, you still have a back-up stash. Good idea to pin your day bag-belly bag-waist bag to your shirt or trousers. Theives will not be able to "lift" it.

    Sturdy walking shoes

Take all your medicines and prescriptions; will be nearly impossible to find what you need here.

Take food for snacks and to suppliment your diet here. The convenient deli or fast food shop will be hard to find. Dry soup packs, nuts, cookies, instant oatmeal. We packed a mug for tea, tea bags, sugar packets, electric water heater for a mug of tea or instant coffee. Be sure to drink only bottled water.
