    Three Gudgeons restaurant,
    Donetsk region
    by hunterV, 4 more photos
There are a lot of roadside cafes, bars and restaurants on Ukrainian roads.
We had lunch in this one on ou way to Donetsk.
It is located on the outskirts of Yenakiyevo Donetsk region on the shore of a nice lake that we always pass on the way to Donetsk.
The restaurant has two floors and two seperate cabins on the second floor.
In warm weather you can have your lunch in one of the cabins on the lakeshore terrace.

Local fish and shish kebab; borshch and fish soup.

As most of the European cities Odessa has a wild night life. Not the life as you would expect after midnight on the 43rd street in New York City, but the life as you would find in Paris, Rome. People go out, they walk on the streets of this beautiful city and enjoy life. Odessa at night is as beautiful as in daytime. People just go places to meet each other, new and old friends.

  • The national cuisine reflects the richness and variety of its traditions which are linked to the customs, culture, spirituality, and folkways of Ukraine. Many dishes are noted for their complexity and variety of cooking methods.
Borshch, an aromatic and appetizing beet-based soup, is the most popular and widely-known Ukrainian dish, containing many ingredients. Besides, meat, standard Ukrainian borshch contains 20 other ingredients. Different versions of borshch are prepared in other regions of Ukraine. The Poltava version, served with halushky (dumplings) contains 18 ingredients, Chernihiv borshch has 16 ingredients. Borshch may be prepared with beef, chicken, meat or mushroom-filled dumplings, baked beets, beans, and mushrooms.
Also popular are the many versions of sauerkraut soup: standard, with buckwheat groats, mushrooms, beans; potato soup, barley soup, and green pea soup.
Many dishes served in Ukraine are prepared in appetizing combinations of meat stuffed in vegetables, e.g. cabbage rolls (holubtsi), stuffed peppers or tomatoes.
Varenyky is very popular, a type of boiled dumpling stuf-fed with cheese, potato, cabbage, meat, chopped liver, potato and mushrooms, cab-bage and mushrooms, cherries, or plums.
Ukrainian cuisine includes many dairy and cheese dishes: soups, sweet breads, puddings, cheesecakes, pancakes, and fruit soups.
There are many varieties of sweet dough preparations, e.g. doughnuts, crisp fried pastry, etc.

  • Stolovye everywhere are fine, but my favourite is a 'Blinnaya' (Pancakery) in Gurzuf, Crimea. Overlooks the sea, serves great bliny, borshch, cutlets, aubergines out of huge pots with slightly dirty cutlery at about a millionth of restaurant prices. Eating steaming hot borshch by the sea when it's +40 celsius is something everyone ought to experience. Plus they offered me a job one year, and when I returned two years later they asked me if I was a tax inspector.

Restaurants and cafes in the Old Town

  • A lot of restaurants and acfees in the old town
We were just in one of the old-town small restaurants (unfortynately I don't remember the name but I remember well the location). The atmosphere inside was exactly like the atmosphere os the whole town - nice and friendly. Prices were even for me, Ukrainian, ridiculously low - we paid about $3 for the dinner for 2 persons (not for each one - for 2 as a whole). I did not feel well, had a headaiche and restaurant owner trying to help, gave me a medicine. Nice people, really the fondest memory.

Vegetable soup, maize kasha (mamalyga), national meat dish 'kruchenyky' and a lot of others

As in Russia, my favorite restaurant in Ukraine is home cooking ! :)

If you like soup, then try Ukrainian borsch (not to be confused with the Russian kind, made solely with beets). It is made with a tomato base, lots of different vegetables, white kidney beans and garlic.

As an aperitiv, try Spotikach, a cherry- or plum-based drink. (There may be other varieties, as well, but those are the two that I tried.) You can't miss the bottle with the dancing Cossack on the front, dressed like the model in the picture I've included with this entry.
