Three Gudgeons: Roadside Restaurants

by hunterV

There are a lot of roadside cafes and restaurants on Ukrainian roads. We had lunch at this one on our way to Donetsk. It is located on the outskirts of the city of Yenakiyevo Donetsk region on the shore of a nice lake that we always pass on the way to Donetsk. The restaurant has two floors and two seperate cabins on the second floor. In warm weather you can have your lunch in one of the cabins on the lakeshore terrace. Local fish and shish kebab; borshch and fish soup.

Arabski Kuhniya: Out-of-the-way Middle Eastern Food

by GlobeTrottin

This restaurant is a hidden treasure because it is not located along the main Deribasavskaya or city-center streets. It is on 18 Staroporotfrankovskaya and would really require taking a local taxi for 20 Hr (or $3) and can be easy to miss. But the food is exceptional, decor great, and prices very reasonable. If you are craving some hummus, kebabs and lavash- this is the place to go!Hands-down best middle-eastern food available in Odessa! (however, I will confess they do not have a good dessert menu. For decent baklava- try Istanbul Cafe) My husband, the ultimate carnivore loves the Mutton ribs and the kebabs as well as the hummus with meat.

Any Restaurants

by shaunawall1

All the restaurants are very expensive. We ate at the food court in the mall near the eternal flame. It was an experience, but very pricey. Could have been the fact that we were in a mall, but our hosts also said it was very pricey to eat out. Most of our dinners were eaten at our relatives. They were very gracious. There was alot of fish at every meal. And every meal was a small variation of the one before. But the bread was so amazing! Stop at one of the kiosks and buy some if you can.

Restaurants are improving

by lotharlerch

During the past years the quality of the restaurants improved clearly. Ukrainian food is excellent but not always at the restaurants although it gets better and better. The best is in Ukrainian homes. Borshtsh, the famous soup is originally Ukrainian and the best borshtsh is the personal recipe of almost every Ukrainian grandmother - enjoy it when you are invited to a private home!

Kvas (Kbac): Drink from a tank

by Enzyme_X

Kvas is traditional ukrainian beer-like soft drink served directly from a tank. It's sold in summer time and you can find these brightly blue and yellow coloured tanks in every city. We've been warned that vendors usualy have only one cup everybody drinks out of. But from what I've seen, all vendors now have piles of plastic cups and every customer gets a proper one.

Dollar menu

by X-Philly

I went to Sokal', Ukraine (formerly Sokolow prior to WWII) a couple of weeks ago. Check out this dollar menu at a local tavern: a bowl of borsch plus a plate of meat dumplings (pelmeni) plus a slice of bread and a quart of tap kvas. The meal was delicious. Beats McDonald's paper taste hamburger for a dollar.

anywhere: What can I eat here!

by Faracy

Perhaps things have changed since I last visited Ukraine, but finding food was a challenge.. In Kyev, I saw very few restaurants at all, and those I saw were expensive, and for lack of better words, seemed pretty mafia orientated. I did see people eating outside standing at little food stands in markets, in the dead of winter.. I did this a few times.. Generally I bought food at the markets and ate it in my hotel, which meant sandwiches and little else.. street pastries are good, particularly those with cheese (seer) (c?p) ... Odessa was a little better, but watch to make sure your meat is fully cooked... my father got sick because of this... avoid meat in general is my best advice.. especially if it is from street vendors. It may be one of those (other) meats that you don?t want to know about... there are a lot of street dogs... if you understand what I mean..
