If you do go to eat don't order the drinks until the food arrives.
I haven't eaten in every restaurant in Sumy obviously, but I have been to enough to know that this is a general pattern!
Food will take 40, 50 minutes, or even longer to come while you keep buying drinks and the restaurant clocks up the profits.
When the waiter asks you what you want to drink tell him you will only order drinks when the food is on the table.
the place is down a flight of stairs across from the banking institute. there very reasonable and not bad for a place to fill up. they also have some tables outside for eating. I didn't see a menu in English but they might have one. they have good salads and decent pizza.
Favorite Dish: I think the salads were the best part and they change every day.
The food was quite good and not very expensive. I am not a beer drinker but quite enjoyed one of the fine brews they make. We sat outside next to a pond with a ship in it where others were seated. they had a menu in English and the staff was friendly by Ukrainian standards.
Favorite Dish: The steak and salads were all quite good.
Sumy is about 5-6 hours drive East from Kiev, Borispol
It looks, on the map, as if you could do it in less, but the roads are atrocious.
You can catch a bus outside the Airport terminal which runs every hour, the fare to Sumy is about £8-$12.
I have used this bus three or four times and the drivers all have a death wish. I would never use it again. These buses are Mercedes Sprinter vans with seats in the back and are not the most comfortable of vehicles.
I now take the bus service, which stops exactly outside the terminal and costs £2,
direct to the railway station, from memory I think the number is 232.
The train then takes about 5 hours to Sumy and costs only £5.00 - $8, It takes a bit longer but you can feel confident that you will be alive when you arrive. Bus crashes and the resulting fatalities are almost weekly items on the local television news.
From the railway station a taxi to anywhere in Sumy should cost no more than £5 -$8 and I have never been charged anymore by the driver because I am a foreigner.
If you don't speak Russian it's a good idea to have your destination address written in Russian for the driver as almost nobody in Sumy speaks English.
Sumy is about four hours drive East from Kiev, Borispol
Average cost of taxi transfer is about $100 if you arrange that through someone from Sumy, I think you'll find it much more expensive to hire a taxi at kiev.

Like in Russian days most cities had one big department store in the centre. This is the one of Sumy. Go and have a look to get an idea.
