Double Christmas

by etfromnc

If you are really into partying, or if you think that Christmas is so special that you would like to celebrate it twice a year, go to the Ukraine immediately after you have your Western Christmas celebration. The New Year holiday is the most celebrated of the year in The Ukraine. During Communism, Ukrainians were not permitted to celebrate Christmas, so the traditional tree, decorations, gift giving, and family gatherings occur on New Year's eve and New Year's day. There are other countries which celebrate their Christmas later than Roman Catholic and Protestant countries do because the Orthodox calendar is different or because of the Communist prohibition against religious celebrations during the era of Soviet preeminence but there is just something extra special about the way that they do it in The Ukraine.

Perch'sk Lavra

by shaunawall1

The cave monastary is a must see and will take probably the whole day to see it and do it justice. It is amazing to see what was built and rebuilt and the culture that is there, the museum, and the history. As you reach the entrance way, you can see the beauty that will be behind the gate. Not much to buy here, but alot to see.

Theatre

by shaunawall1

The theatre in Kyiv if beautiful, but things are not always what they seem. The light fixtures are wood, painted with gold paint to look ritzy. None the less, it was an experience I wouldn't have missed. The history behind it is interesting too. There was a murder there. But that aside, it is amazing to be in a place as the Tsar and Tsarina. Even the bathrooms are beautiful. Each night there is something new being performed. Also, it is a short walk to Independence square and one of three gates that used to protect Kyiv

translators into 100 languages in Kiyv

by catnl

How to get translation help by Dmytro Lytvynko, Kyiv Post Staff WriterMar 14 2007, 22:33In order to avoid misunderstandings and really enjoy your trip to a foreign country, gaining at least some notion of the country’s language is a must. However, if your trip is quick and you don’t have time for an in-depth study of grammar and vocabulary, there are special companies specializing in translation that can help you. One of these companies is the translations bureau Druzhba Narodiv (Peoples’ Friendship) (22 Rusanivska Naberezhna, office #6, 465-7132, www.druzhbanarodov.com. ua). The company works in more than 50 languages, including both widespread (English, French) and non-widespread (Macedonian, Tatar) ones. In addition to oral translations (starting from $12 per hour) company does written translations, which cost $6 to $12 per 2,000 signs. Another well known translations bureau is April...

The Open air museum of old Carpathian villages

by lotharlerch

There are several excellent museums of this type in Ukraine: The one here in Uzhhorod is one of the best. It is on a hill above the city and shows nice examples of houses of the various ethnic groups among the Ukrainan peasants in the Carpathians.

go to Kiev just go and have fun

by abettorbob

Traveler rating: Kiev: "the spirit of Kiev" Apr 29, 2006: A TripAdvisor Member, frederick, maryland View larger photos Kiev is alive and full of naïve optimism! The spirit is upbeat, full of hope and with a positive vibe.Having read what I could find about Kiev and Ukraine—I ventured off for several solo days to see what this city had to offer. (Plenty!!) Naturally impressed by the architecture and building designs, the cleanliness was impressive as well. Odessa seemed more grungy in comparison—still way cool and worth the visit! I arranged an apartment (way cheaper than hotels generally) right next to the Museum and across the street from awesome city partk (Marlinsky Park/Palace.)The park is full of life, rollerblading, couples and smiles---sort of.When you go, cross Lover’s Bridge and look for my solo initials. Find your way to Volodimir’s statue—the story of mass baptism and...

Well of course dacha is also the place where you work hard - growing potato, carrots, cabage, strawberries etc. But still it is the place where you can relax from noisy city. Pecherska Lavra (Caves Monastery)

by Enzyme_X

This huge complex of churches and monasterys was added to UNESCO list in 1990. The monastery was found in 1051 and dug into ground by monks who then lived in those caves. After they died the bodies were preserved by cool temperatures and dry air. The mummies are still in those caves where you can see them. Just watch you head, as the tunnels are rather small.Later the monastery spread also above ground and it became an intellectual center of Kyivan Rus. Through centuries, monastery suffered several fires and destructions, but it was always rebuilt and in 1926 made a museum. The place still serves it's porpouse. Monks still live here and churches are still being used for masses, so when visiting you should behave properly and dress decent (no shorts). You can vistit the churche and the caves. There are also some museums that charge additional fee.
