Exploring WWII Battlefields - KORSUN

by Tykkit

Korsun is situated approximately 145 kilometers south of Kyiv and is an ideal jumping off spot for travelers interested in exploring the hundreds and hundreds of trenches, bunkers and foxholes associated with the famous Korsun-Cherkassy Pocket battles of January and February, 1944. It is here that the Soviet Army defeated the Germans in one of the most decisive military engagements of the Second World War.

Sebastopol

by Mique

Sebastopol is another of those places i alove because of the name. And it is a very nice place. Loads of sea everywhere, 2 nice boulevards and enough cultural things to see and do to keep one busy for a few days. Besides, i love to watch ships. And this is an excellent place for it.

Yalta

by Mique

This is a place that i just wanted to visit because of the name. It is very touristy, mostly with ukrainans though. I spend a nice time here but i just it mostly as a base to visit other places from. Even though i now know what the place is like, i always will like the sound of Yalta. It has this nostalgic ring to it.

Odessa

by Mique

Odessa is a very open city. Since the city is fairly recent, dating back to 17-something it could be really nicely be constructed with wide straight roads, parks and all that makes a city. Buildings in the centre aren't supposed to be above 4 storeys high. And i'm quite taken with the fact that it was a dutch man that was the architect of it. There is a small history of Odessa museum where you can find all about it (if you speak russian). Of course the most know thing about Odessa are its famous steps. They've figured in many a film

Bakchaserei

by DomLewenz

Bakchaserei is the old centre for the Crimean Tatars before Stalin carted them all off to Uzbekenistan (I've always felt the man was one of life's 'givers') Amazing geomectric designs, which I'm afraid VT only allows me to upload one photo), which are obviously Islamic in origin, and quite beautiful. Definately worth a visit!

Kamyanets-Podilsky

by Lensa

Kamyanets-Podilsky one of the oldest cities in the Ukraine, is considered a phenomenon of great cultural importance. A rocky island skirted by the tight loop of the Smotrich River flowing in a picturesque canyon, served as a unique pedestal on which over more than a thousand years both well-known and anonymous masters created a miracle in stone. Kamyanets-Podilsky is striking for the harmonious blend of landscape and architecture. My friend stayed at the Hotel "Ukraine" on L.Ukrainky Str., 32. Decent place, cheap bar/cafe with excellent food. There were some problems with hot water, but he's got it in semi lux room.http://www.kp.km.ua/

The Lavra of the Monks (caves of the monks) Kyev

by Faracy

Going here was a religious experience, not so much because of being surrounded by monks, or churches, but because I thought I might die there... You go down these pitch black little stair ways, holding a little beeswax candle, and enter a abyss of darkness... then if your lucky, you might find a candle to relight yours, and light your way through this windy maze of underground shrines... just out in the open are the covered, but mummified remains of the priests.. I canýt put it into words... but go there... its will scare you, but you will be glad you went... p.s. I was there during a blizzard, which added to the ambiance.

Cave Towns of Crimea

by vairab

Cave Towns of Crimea are wonderful places to visit. They are found on the mesas of the inner ridge of the Crimean mountains. The towns were carved and lived in because of incessant raids of nomadic tribes. The people abandoned their valley dwellings and made for the mountains. The Cave Towns provided natural defense because of natural obstacles, abrupt forbidding cliffs and powerful fortification walls, sometimes up to 2 meters thick.Crimea has many historical and beautiful sites. They are however, not for the faint at heart. A number of places are not accessible by auto and require long and arduous hikes to reach. Because of this they are also seen in their rustic and original settings. Amazing!!
