Medieval Fortress

by IngaA

Surprisingly well-preserved fortress at the very centre of the town, that survived numerous sieges. Now travel agencies organise a knight battles there. In one of the towers (Papska vezha), Ustim Karmaluk,, can say Ukrainian Robin Hood was imprisoned. The legend says that he was very handsome man and a lot of young girls came to the tower to look at him and brought him a kerchief or a scar. He stored all these gifts and then, when he had enough scarfs, he bounded them together, put it into the tower window and escaped form the prison.Today the fortress look very picturesque, the walls are covered with nice yellow flowers - wonderful!

Dominican cathedral

by IngaA

Very beautiful catholic cathedral in the old town party, made in italian style. Now is being renovated, especially inside. A lot of buildings in the old town need the restoration, I hope the local power will find a way (and also money and willing) to complete it and to preserve these unique masterpieces

St. Peter and Paul's cathedral

by IngaA

Ancient medieval catholic cathedral built at the time of Polish donimation. Has the nicest in Ukraine wooden decoration near alter. The history of this building is very interesting. After Polish trops left the town, it was conquested by Turkishes. They wanted to declare Islam. It is reflected in the acrhitecture, which makes now an interesting combination of 'western' and 'eastern'. St, Peter and Paul's cathedral is an example. Turkishes built a minaret near the cathedral and just declared it as a mosk. Some time after, when the Polish troops regain their power, they (again) did not destroyes 'the mosk' but they put a golden statue of Virgin Maria on the minaret. Now we can observe this unique place,,, the most probably such a thing doesn't exist anywhere else. And one more interesting and sad story. Inside the cathedral there is a marber monument made by the famous sculpture Brodskiy (his...

by drolkar

The Open-Air Museum of Architecture and Everyday Life, located just outside of Kiev. (More photos coming soon!)Houses, cottages and churches from the 18th and 19th centuries have been transported to this museum from all over Ukraine. You can see how wealthy and not-so-wealthy peasants lived, as well as the tools they used to make their living. Most notable among the latter are windmills and bee-hives. In most cases, the interiors of the cottages are also furnished in the style of the period.A guide will escort you around the museum grounds for a nominal fee (I paid about USD $10 for a 1 1/2 hour visit), and there are guides who speak various languages. Personally, I found it worthwhile to visit the museum with a guide, since there are no signs indicating where the various buildings are from and what they represent. If you know Russian or Italian, then ask for Ivan -- he was my guide, and...

Another place to visit just outside of Odessa is the Assumption Monastery. There is an Eastern Orthodox church there, and inside the monastery is a beautiful display of icons (small religious paintings). This pic is at the front gates.

And, of course there is shopping! here are a few of the best souveneirs to bring back- fur hats, stacking wooden dolls, painted wooden boxes, military hats/jackets. When I was there, they not only accepted U.S. dollars- they had some things for sale for only U.S. Dollars! An example would be lipstick- even the locals had to buy it with U.S. currency! So bring lots of small bills if visiting! Trading was also a fairly common thing at the time. A pack of American cigarettes could be a great bartering tool.

I love underground activities- and I mean literally under ground here- so I definately went to the World War II Catacombs! They have tours down in the catacombs so you get to see what it was like during the war. This picture was taken inside- they actually carved into the stone to make a few sculptures inside. You can also see rooms set up the way they were at the time.

by EskiMoe

Go to the Crimea in the summer time, and enjoy the main tourist area of Ukraine. Lots of Ukrainians come to the many resorts along the Black Sea cost.Wonderful temperature and good swimming conditions. The nature is dramatic, with steep mountains dropping into the sea. The athmosphere is relaxing and the mood is happy. The most famous resort is the town of Yalta, but there are many other nice places.

by EskiMoe

In Kyiv, you should take a stroll down the 'Andreyevsij Uzviz', also called the 'Artists' street'. Completely stuffed with artists and souvenir sellers. Some of it is nice, some of it is junk - but an interesting walk. Good restaurants and cafes along the way, when you get thirsty or hungry.
