by drolkar Actually, this is a write-up of one 'tourist trap' that actually had better prices than the local stores I visited! At ANDREEV SPUSK (the sloping hill by St. Andrew's Cathedral), you will see vendors selling all different kinds of things: Ukrainian embroidery, matreshki (Russian nesting dolls, which are most definitely NOT Ukrainian), T-shirts, postcards, etc. At least in the case of the embroidery, the prices turned out to be more reasonable than anywhere else I looked (80 grivna or about USD $16 for a women's blouse with red and black embroidery), so I would not discount this locale as a shopping place just because it looks 'touristy' -- especially if you speak Ukrainian or Russian, or are with someone who does! by Michael_D In every Ukranian city there was kiosk after kiosk after kiosk..with the usual stuff. SNICKERS has to have the corner on the candy market as I found them EVERYWHERE. The drink of choice EVERYWHERE was PEPSI...it seemed to BE the ONLY choice.(Y-U-C-K I like coke!) Leave a Comment

Before using the public transport in a particular town or city, ask locals how you must pay for that. I had a very unpleasant experience in Kyiv, where I was forced to pay a fee for the PAID trip on a bus. When you buy a ticket from the driver or conductor, it could be not enough - That time I should also stamp my ticket with a special device (sorry, I can't find an English word for it, but I hope you understand what I mean). Coming to Ukraine, you could be forced to buy an insurance police, regardless of that you have bought in your home country before your journey. Ukrainians DO NOT ACCEPT any other insurance except their own, so do not spend your money twice on the same thing! Anyway, if you will come without insurance, and custom officers will not disturb you with buying THEIR insurance, you will also be able to buy it later ;) Leave a Comment

In many countries the taxi mafia is active, If they see a tourist they see the dollars and try to cheat you. So don't be naiv, Get a feeling for the right price by asking other people. Always ask for the price before you get off. Always look what the driver does if he uses the taxameter. In Hungary they have sometimes a manipulated taxameter. If you drive by day be sure that he doesn't use the night tarif.
Pay and try to do better next time!
Use public transport!

When you enter the country (as foreigner) you have to !Buy! a health insurance, even if you have a proper one valid over the whole world. Even if you bring a letter from your own health insurance which says it's valid all over the world. you pay about 10-15 USD. Leave a Comment
