Anyone can be a taxi driver

by mariahc1

Once arriving in Ukraine, we searched for a taxi outside the airport to drive us to our hotel. We noticed that there were more cars than taxis outside which surprised us very much. We quickly realized that in Kiev, anyone can be a taxi driver! If you decide to drive people around and get paid for it, then you automatically become a taxi driver. We never learnt if that was legal or not (it was probably illegal). Only enter cars with the TAXI sign on them which have a legal taxi meter otherwise you might end up paying for any price they set.

St. Andrew's Slope & Church

by shaunawall1

It's not so much a tourist trap, as it is many merchants competing for your business. Be very careful here, not to be pickpocketed or fast talked. Although this is a very beautiful ascent to the church with it's meandering cobblestoned street, be wary of the deal you are getting. Start at the bottom of the slope and work your way up. Some things are a dime a dozen and others are one of a kind. Keep your eyes open and if you see lots of the same, you almost guaranteed to see more as you go up. However, if you do find something that is just what you are looking for and you haven't seen it anywhere else, buy it now. Definately barter, but don't insult them. There are many beautiful kiosks that are set up on this route and it is definately worth seeing. There are also many perfect picture opportunities here as well - Richard the Lionheart's castle, the statue of Shevchenko, St Andrew's...

Taxi mafia

by Tobias_Plieninger

In many countries the taxi mafia is active,If they see a tourist they see the dollars and try to cheat you.So don't be naiv, Get a feeling for the right price by asking other people.Always ask for the price before you get off.Always look what the driver does if he uses the taxameter. In Hungary they have sometimes a manipulated taxameter. If you drive by day be sure that he doesn't use the night tarif. Pay and try to do better next time! Use public transport!

Street patrols

by Enzyme_X

While driving around Ukraine we saw quite a lot of police patrols controling the traffic. Once we were even stopped. The reason: speeding. Speed limit was 60 km/h, we supposably drove 102 km/h (so the pilceman). In truth we drove around 130 km/h (ovesaw the town sign + all the others also didn't slow down). So we guessed that the policeman didn't have a radar but just estimated our speed. Be carful when you see that some car that drives the opposite way flashes the lights. That means that police is somewhere. I must say that this kind of signalisation really works among the Ukrainians.Slow down when you see a speed limit sign. You don't have to go as slow as the sign says but choose a velocity where policemen wont be certain if you are speedin or not.At the end we didn't pay anything. As we could't really understand eachother he let us go.

Accident

by Klod5

The circulation on the roads and in the streets in Ukraine is not easy because of the state of the pavement. The Ukrainian drivers look more like stunt men that to drivers. Especially the drivers of taxicabs. Supplementary reasons to remain very prudent if you rent a car, because, in addition, the police be stretch with you, if you are foreign. Therefore, if you want to escape worries of the militia and the police, drive wisely, while mistrusting the other driver behavior, ready to make an important gap to avoid a hole in the pavement. In that of accident, him and likely that you will have to undergo a real blackmail on behalf of representing them of the authority, until they get what they want : your devises.

Actually, this is a write-up...

by drolkar

Actually, this is a write-up of one 'tourist trap' that actually had better prices than the local stores I visited! At ANDREEV SPUSK (the sloping hill by St. Andrew's Cathedral), you will see vendors selling all different kinds of things: Ukrainian embroidery, matreshki (Russian nesting dolls, which are most definitely NOT Ukrainian), T-shirts, postcards, etc. At least in the case of the embroidery, the prices turned out to be more reasonable than anywhere else I looked (80 grivna or about USD $16 for a women's blouse with red and black embroidery), so I would not discount this locale as a shopping place just because it looks 'touristy' -- especially if you speak Ukrainian or Russian, or are with someone who does!

When you enter the country (as foreigner) you have to !Buy! a health insurance, even if you have a proper one valid over the whole world. Even if you bring a letter from your own health insurance which says it's valid all over the world.you pay about 10-15 USD.
