Ceveral centuries ago Crimea was under the jurisdiction of Turkish Ottoman Empire, reigned by the Crimean governor, Khan. Rather independent from Turkey, it was like a Turkish alien. So the Crimean governors built the palace for themselves. The dynasty of Guirey Khans reigned in Crimea. Bakhchisaray means 'bloomy garden' in tatar. And it's really like that. Differ from other buildings in christian Ukraine, it keeps the oriental muslim style and architecture. Also used for some historical films about constant wars between Ukraine and Turkey. And there is a known story related to this palace. One of the most powerful Khans, Krym-Guirey, had a harem, as all muslims. The most beautiful women from different countrues were his wives. And once he saw a newly brought young women and fell in love with her, deeply and mindlessly. History does not keep her name. The most probably it was young Polish princess Maria Potocka, but it still remains a mystery. She didn't reply to Khan's feelings and died. Guirey was so sad that he ordered his best sculpture to 'make a stone cry'. So the known Bakhchisaray stone fontain appeared, honoured by the great poets - Russian Alexander Pushkin and Polish Adam Mickiewicz. Copies of this fontain can be found in St-Petersbourg museam Ermitage. Near the palace, there is also ancient scale cave towm Chufut Cale. Also worthwile of visiting, as a trace of an ancient civilisation. From the top of the hills, quite far in the fog, you can see a top od Roman-Kosh, the highest mountain in Crimea. Leave a Comment Directions: Bakhchisaray town, in the step zone of Crimea. A lot of travel agencies organise a visits there.

It's a small castle-like building, also near Yalta. Originally it was located on the big scale and was just the nice place. But after the earthquake a part of the scale fell down into the sea and the castle turned out to be on the very end of a scale, like a swallow nest. That was the origin of its romantic title. Now there is a restauraint in this castle, and a lpce to walk around. Leave a Comment Address: near Yalta

Livadia, Palace of the Russian tsar (king) Nice big palace, very impressive and beautiful. As usual, with garden, internal yard nice sculptures. Was built for the Russian tsar (royal) family. The last Russian Tsar Nikolay 2 loved to spend summer time here. Known by the Yalta international conference that took place during the WW2. But it's for foreigners. The most funny thing, is that locals associate this palace with a very well-known nice movie 'Dog on the hay', on the Lope de Vega's comedy. We like this movie so much that almost know it by heart, and tourists from former USSR always discuss at which place each scene was played :)) There are also famous tsar wine caves. Indeed wine caves are everywgere in Crimea, this region is faous by its wine of high quality. Leave a Comment Directions: Livadia small town, about 10-15 nimutes from Yalta

An obvious touristy thing to do is to visit Ai Petri. It's a somewhat odd thing, on one side it's a steep mountain, on the other side it's barely a hill. The views over the coast are very nice. Tip for high season: if you go there in the morning go up the mountain by van and down via the cable cabin. If you're going there in the afternoon follow the opposite schedule. The goal is to avoid the long lines for the cabin. Leave a Comment

Visit the Nikita botanic garden. Lots of interesting trees, bushes and flowers can be seen here. There is a cactus greenhouse in the garden, with more than 2000 sorts of cactuses. The best time to visit is Spring, when all plants blossom. You can see more pictures from in the travelogue. The tree that is in the picture is called Zemlyanichnick in russian (wild strawberry tree). It is called so strange because it's fruits look like a strawberry :) This tree lives only in Crimea, so if You want a real Crimean pictute, take a shot with this tree :) Leave a Comment

Take a walk on the boulevard next to the sea - and look for these wonderful street-lights, as they are relicts of better times, a long time BEFORE the communists came. Obviously they were gaslights first and were electrified lateron. Leave a Comment Directions: The boulevard starts at the port !
