REGISTERING YOUR PASSPORT WITH UKRAINIAN AUTHORITIES –IT’S THE LAW!
All foreigners are required to register their passports with local authorities. Individuals who fail to do so should expect to have problems when they attempt to leave the country and may face fines up to several thousands of dollars, depending on the length of time they spent 'illegally' in the country.
This registration requirement is met automatically when foreigners stay in hotels (hotel administration bears responsibility for registration) or when students register under established exchange programs.
However, private visitors are still required to have their hosts or relatives register their presence. The place to register is called the Office of Visas and Registration –OVIR in Russian, VVIR in Ukrainian that has jurisdiction over the pace of a foreigner’s residence. It is also the office that extends a foreigner’s visa, if need be.
MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR MEDICAL CARE IN UKRAINE
All visitors, individuals or on a group tour, to Ukraine are required to obtain mandatory health insurance from the state joint-stock insurance company UKRINMEDSTRACH at the point of entry into Ukraine.
Only holders of official or diplomatic passports are exempt from this requirement
The program firstly, guarantees that any visitor to Ukraine will have continuing access to the public health system in emergency cases and, secondly, it ensures that the facilities rendering emergency care are compensated for their services.
