Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, Kilchoan, Acharacle

All those who thought that the most westerly point on mainland Britain was in Cornwall, then think again!. It is actually
Ardnamurchan Point at the end of the Ardnamurchan Peninsular.
Right at the end in what must be one of the most windswept and desolate parts of the UK stands the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.
The light is some 35m tall and was constructed in 1849.
The lighthouse is now unmanned and is a museum and there is also a cafe, with fine fews out to the neighbouring islands.

Waterfall, near Acharacle

After a few days rain (which is not uncommon in this part of Scotland) it is possible to see quite a few spectacular waterfalls in the region of Acharacle.
This one was encountered on the A830 road near Glenfinnian.

Loch Shiel, Acharacle

Acharacle lies at one end of Loch Shiel. At the other end some 20km away is the settlement of Glenfinnian, probably most famed for its monument.
It is possible in the summer to get a boat trip between the two places.
There is also good fishing to be had on the loch.

Shiel Bridge, Acharacle

Thomas Telford built the first bridge over the river Shiel in the early 1800's. The road made Acharacle more accesable as before the main route in and out of the settlement was over the water via Loch Sihel.
The present stone bridge dates back to the 1930's.

Castle Tioram

Castle Tioram, Acharacle, Scotland

castle Tioram stands majestic upon a small tidal island in Loch Moidart . It is possible to walk over to the castle only at low tide via the causeway.
The castle was built in the 13thC and later modified to provide a home for Amy MacRuari, the ex-wife of the 7th Lord of the Isles. Much of what we see today dates back to this time. Castle Tioram was also the main fortress of the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald. Sadly, though, the castle is in a very poor condition and has been closed to visitors. Today there are signs on the causeway warning visitors that much of the island is dangerous because of the risk of falling masonry. There are proposals in the wings to restore Castle Tioram to its earlier glory, but these are caught up in a major planning dispute: and meantime the structure continues to crumble.

Shetland Pony. Acharacle

In Acharacle there is a small farm where we saw this delightful pony. There were several of them grazing in quite a muddy field as it had been raining for several days.
