Ellesmere is a large village just over the Cheshire border in Shropshire and we stopped here on our way to Welshpool. There are the ruins of a castle here that are worth stopping to look at. The castle was founded just after the Norman conquest but abandoned shortly after just a few years of being built.
The castle entrance still stands and there is no charge to explore this from the outside and see where the castle would have stood. The area that was presumably the keep has been grassed over and there is a good view of the village from up on the hill. The moat still exists in part and the castle ruin is quite photogenic.

Good quality shops in a craft centre that never advertises. We found it purely by chance and it is well worth a visit.
What to buy: Several shops - clothes, garden goods, sweets, bags and belts, general gifts and art wrk.
What to pay: Various prices but prices generally good and reasonable.
