Ballater Things to Do

Balmoral Castle lies about 10 miles west of Ballater. It is the summer home of the royal family, dating back to its construction by Queen Victoria in 1852 along with her husband, Prince Albert.

Currently the Queen vists around August and September. The Castle is "open" from April to October, but it is closed to visitors while the Queen is in residence.

When it is open, only one display room of the castle is open, while the rest of the castle is closed to the public. The grounds are open, and these are very pretty, offering several walking trails around the grounds.

A nice little resturant at modest prices. The decor makes you feel you are sitting in the 1880s.

The building itself was the old train station. This was the last stop on the line from Aberdeen. It was used by the royal family when travelling to Balmoral. There is also a display regarding this subject here.

Ballater Off The Beaten Path

The River Dee runs nearby the road out to Ballater. There are plenty of little places to stop, look, and see.
Surprisingly there are spot people like to go to because if you look at the bottom left corner of the picture, you will see a couple getting it on, which made me laugh.
