Mill Street here in Bideford runs for a couple of hundred yards off the lower end of the High Street and is packed with little independent shops (45 at the last count). The shops range from traditional butchers and bakers to quite upmarket jewellers with pretty much everything in between - even a funeral directors!
My favourite little shop is "Bookends" which is a remainder booksellers. Even though it sells these "surplus to requirements" books it still manages to have a good selection of popular fiction paperbacks which sell for less than half the normal price. This is ideal for those times when I've run out of books that I definitely wanted to read and just fancy browsing and seeing what I can I find.
What to buy: Recent purchases have included a couple of Ian Rankin's older books as well as works by Peter James, an author who was recently recommended to me.
What to pay: You'll find all sorts of books here: fiction and non-fiction; paperback and hardback and all at greatly reduced prices and so what you spend is up to you but always will be a bargain!
