    Sutton Scarsdale Hall
    4 more images

This is the imposing shell of a grandiose Georgian mansion built in 1724, with an immensely columned exterior. Roofless since c. 1920, when its interiors were dismantled and some exported to America. But there is still much to discover within, including traces of sumptuous plaster-work. Set amid contemporary garden remains.
There are good views from the ruins over the nearby value.

To the Jacobite owners of Bolsover Castle, chivalry and horses were important. An indoor riding school was constructed which is still there today in remarkably good condition, along with its sand floor and fine oak framed roof.

Bolsover Castle - The Terrace Range

With its lavish entertaining, the castle soon became to small and the Terrace Range was added to provide grand state appartments. From here there were great views over the valley as far as the Peak District.

The Little Castle" is the original part of the castle we see today. It was begun by Sir Charles Cavendish and finished by his son. It was very elaborately decorated within in the best style of the Jacobean period with painted ceilings nad marvellous marble fireplaces

    Bolsover Castle

Bolsover Castle as a dominating position on a hill overlooking a valley. The present castle occupies the site of a medieval castle built by the Peverel family shortly after the Norman Conquest. Sir Charles Cavendish bought the old castle in 1612 and began work on his 'Little Castle' project. The castle was however built more for comfort than defence reasons.

    Interior

by ginte Updated Oct 6, 2005

Inside the castle you're allowed to see almost all rooms. Many of them are recently restorated of much of the original painted decoration of the castle. Some of them look really nice and have many big windows, as in the picture. But some of them are quite dark because of the lack of the light coming inside through the little windows and quite dark walls. I just wonder how somebody lived in such gloomy rooms...

Bolsover Castle is 17th century house built on the site of a Norman fortress. It's located on the high hill, so it's seen very well from everywhere around as a landmark. Inside of it you can find Caesar paintings, which were comissioned in the 17th century by William Cavendish as copies of an original set by the great Venetian artist Titian.
