Halecat Gardens and Nursery
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is somewhere we just decided to visit on the spur of the moment, on the off-chance it might be open. It was but it wasn't exactly what we had anticipated. The lovely house is private but you can look round the pretty gardens and have a ramble along the footpaths through a wilderness of damson trees, apple trees, brambles and more. It seemed to be a very sheltered garden and fruit was in abundance. Apples were lying on the floor and damsons still hung on trees. It made us laugh because at the tearoom thet were trying to flog apples at 10p each. There were even apple laden trees in the car-park. A very fruitful business!!!
The nursery tends to cater for smaller businesses and has more of a personal feel to it than some. I must admit, whether it was the time of year, it all looked a bit passed it's sell-by date and had gone to pot a bit.
There is a very rustic tearoom in a garden shed with some outdoor seats and there appeared to be a covered area with seats, whether this was for educational trips, I'm not sure.

The garden was free to look round in October.

    Visit The Village Shop!!!!
Yes, Bowland Bridge is fortunate enough to have retained it's village shop/Post Office, where a wonderful selection of goodies can be purchased. Like many of these traditional shops, it stocks a range of local produce.

Be warned, however, that as this is also a Post Office, the place appears to keep Post Office hours and shuts on Saturday afternoons. Not so good when you are hot and sticky after a walk and could really go an ice lolly!!

    St. Anthony's Church, Cartmel Fell
As churches go, this is a beauty. Located in a beautiful place, up a dead end lane and with rural views, it is a moving church to visit. It is the only church in England dedicated to St. Anthony and was built in 1504.
It is actually built on a slope, which is obvious from the outside as you can see a seat built onto the side of the church sloping downhill.
Inside, the splendid wooden beams of the ceiling are probably the first thing you notice. On either side are wooden, boxed pews, quite some workmanship in these.
The 15thc. stained glass windows have come from Cartmel Priory, a spectacular priory in Cartmel, near Grange-over-Sands and depict Christ on the cross linked with St. Anthony and St. Leonard by streams of Christ's blood.

Outside the church grounds is the Parish Hall. This was originally the primary school up until 1965.
