The Easter Ross area was settled early by Vikings and Picts.
There are a number of Pictish standing stones in the area, and a Pictish Trail can be followed. [Shandwick, Hilton, Tarbat, as well as on the Black Isle , Rosemarkie]
At Edderton, north of Tain there is a standing Pictish stone in a field near the railway station. It is said to have the etching of a fish on it. A stone circle is also nearby. to the north of the road I am not sure if this is the 'pointed stone' of Bronze Age origin.
In Edderton Churchyard is another standing stone, in the centre of the picture. It is of red sandstone, and appears pale brown in the photo. On one side [the western side] is a Celtic cross . On the eastern side is another cross on a semi-circular arch beneath which is a man on horseback. Another two riders appear below which used to be hidden as the slab formerly was sunk well below its present level, hence the different colour .
