Things to Do

Lovely Town

Lovely Town, Newbury

ligaya Says:  Lovely Canal, but the major thing are the racing and the gambling, but not much to do. Order a Chinese Takeway, going to an Italian or Indian Restaurant, the Bingo, working, watching the geese at the canal, going to the pub where ever.

Mucking around in boats.....

Mucking around in boats....., Newbury

leighdave Says:  Through the center of the town and beyond in both directions flows the Kennett-Avon canal. Its great to sit and relax in a bar and see a barge go by.............But doing it is better. You can hire barges for the day at around £100 and you can get up to ten people on them...

Racing at Newbury Racecourse

Racing at Newbury Racecourse, Newbury

Wishful_Sair_in_2003 Says:  Go on - have a flutter.Best thing was watching my mother winning £200! Her face went through the whole range of emotions watching the horse come in.My son thought the big TV screen was good - you could see the car with the flashing light.Anyway, fine way to while away an...

See Kennet and Avon Canal

See Kennet and Avon Canal, Newbury

Wishful_Sair_in_2003 Says:  Pretty canal barges - lots of swans - nice photo opportunities around canal and locks. Can walk from Reading along canal path. Walking to Reading might be rather more fun as Newbury is less exciting than Reading, and I prefer walks ending in pubs, tea-rooms or shops!

Kennet & Avon Canal

Kennet & Avon Canal, Newbury

maverick-mw Says:  A walk along the Kennet & Avon Canal is worth a trip, for local wildlife and landscapes of southern England at its best.

The Tote

The Tote, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  Officially the Totalisator Board, affectionately "Nanny" or "the old nanny goat", the State betting operation is an alternative to the bookies. Instead of betting at fixed odds, you buy a share in the pool, which is then distributed to winners after a slice has been taken...

The Parade Ring

The Parade Ring, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  You can just stand by the rails and watch the races if you want, but if you do you'll miss a lot. Before each race the horses are paraded before spectators by the stable lad or stable girl who looks after them. This is where you can get a good look at the horses and see how...

Bookmakers (3)

Bookmakers (3), Newbury

KennetRose Says:  Although the traditional manual boards still dominate, with the odds being changed with a marker pen and a wipe of the bookie's sleeve, an increasing number are moving towards electronic boards driven by a keyboard.I mention this by way of a warning to photographers - you'll...

Bookmakers (2)

Bookmakers (2), Newbury

KennetRose Says:  When you've decided which horse to back, and you've looked around the bookies for the one whose odds and honest look you fancy the most, just go up to him, give the number (not the name) of your horse, your stake and whether "win" or "each way". He will take your money and...

Fast food kiosks

Fast food kiosks, Newbury

uglyscot Says:  Punters and spectators can get sustenance at a number of kiosks offering sandwiches, pork, baked potatoes, chicken and drinks. The coronation chicken baguette was fine. It cost 3.50 GBP as did allmost all the food on offer.

Bar Cuba Logo

Bar Cuba is where all our local friends go for a dance and to listen to the cool tunes by the many local DJs who pump out all kinds from Hard House to easy beats.

There is not much seating in the frount (by the dance floor) but if you are lucky enough to grab the couches there stay there all night!!

There is pleanty of seating in the back but most people spend all night on the dancefloor anyway!!

Drinks are reasonably priced and the wait at the bar is not long.

Dress Code: Girls - Anything really , Guys - no white soled shoes, tidy clothes

Combination bets

Combination bets, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  These are not normally available at course bookmakers but are common bets at off-course bookies. Sometimes I enjoy having a Patent to add some spice to a dull afternoon at work, though I'm not adventurous enough for the more elaborate bets! When combinations come off you can...

Betting

Betting, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  The simplest bet is to win - that is, you stake a sum on your fancied horse and if it wins you collect your stake plus a bonus according to the odds offered - if you bet one pound on a horse quoted at 7-1 you get your one pound back plus 7 pounds from the bookmaker. An Each...

Warnings and Dangers

Spread betting

Spread betting, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  Spread betting has become very fashionable in recent years, and if you are really serious about making money it is one way to do it - but it is dangerous and you can lose very heavily too. With fixed-odds betting the worst that can happen is that you lose your stake, but with...

Betting sensibly

Betting sensibly, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  Bet for fun, not for profit!Betting on the races gives you an interest in and an edge to the action. But don't expect to get rich, you won't.A very few professional gamblers make a living out of betting on horse racing. Generally they do it by being well in the know and...

Path up to the Castle

My boyfriend has lived in Newbury/Reading for over 20 years and did'nt know this was here!!

Just a short ride up the hill from the town centre you get to Donnington Castle.

The striking twin-towered 14th- century gatehouse of this castle, later the focus of a Civil War siege and battle, survives amid impressive earthworks.

The view from up here is great too!

Newbury Races

I went to Newbury to go horse racing to watch the Hennesy Gold Cup meeting. It was a great day out except for the lack of winners, although we did miss the first race as we were still in the pub.
The journey there and back was fun as well, if anybody had seen us they would have fallen about laughing, 3 men in suits sat on a settee in the back of a transit van.

Equipment: A pair of binoculars would be handy to see the far side of the course.

The National Hunt

The National Hunt, Newbury

KennetRose Says:  National Hunt racing usually involves jumping over some kind of obstacles, do it is often referred to as Jumps racing. The races cover longer distances than the Flat, and the winter conditions are often difficult. Tactical racing is the order of the day, rather than going...

The Flat

The Flat, Newbury

KennetRose Says:   Flat racing is the kind of horseracing familiar in the rest of the world, where you find the multi-millionaire playboys, and takes place in the summer, partly because the harder ground suits this kind of racing and partly because its personalities spend the winter swanning...
