The ancient settlement of Reading was built on the River Kennet, not the Thames. The Thames washed its walls on the northern side until 1974, when Reading absorbed the previously separate town of Caversham, Oxfordshire, on the north bank. Even today, Caversham retains the feel of a quite different town, though the name Caversham carries more social cachet than Reading and is used to refer to places south of the Thames! The Thames itself is great for walking and watching boats and waterfowl. You can also look across to some of the lushest private houses in the UK!
