yum! by sue_stone If you pay a visit to Windsor Castle, stop off and have a Creamed Tea at the Crooked Tea House. A Creamed Tea consists of a pot of tea (or coffee) and scones with jam and thick clotted cream. It is said that the building has a secret passageway from the basement into Windsor Castle.
The Creamed Tea, of course! We were chatting with a very nice lady on the bus from the airport so we asked her where to go to have some fish and chips, she said the best were at Albert's Fish and Chips although they a little dearer (that would be pricier for us from the other side of the pond) than most. I think our total bill was £16.
Very tasty cod with chips and choice of mushy peas or garden peas (which of course I passed on!) This delightful little pub/inn beckoned us in for a spot of lunch. It was a cloudy cool day so soup and sandwich sounded great and the Crown and Cushion Inn did not disappoint. It describes itself as a 'quirky 16th century coaching inn' and indeed has the welcoming feel of one with a distinctly friendly, homey atmosphere which was probably enhanced by a group of gray haired ladies lunching at the next table. They appeared to be local folk. The bar and little lounge area just said 'little English pub' to me. It is also an inn or bed & breakfast and my wife and I agreed that if we ever get the chance to stay in Windsor/Eton, we will check it out.
I had minnestrone and a sandwich of cheddar with mango chutney on a baguette. My wife had a lovely carrot and coriander soup. I washed mine down with a Fullers Chicwick Bitter and my wife had tea. A quite simple, but very tasty and, by UK standards, inexpensive lunch. Sandwiches are GBP 4.95 and soup 3.95. Just a short walk away from Windsor Castle on High Street, this is a lovely place to stop and have tea. On a weekday in January, there was no one besides us in the upstairs level but imagine that's not the case on the weekends or in the peak summer travel months. You can make a reservation during the week but not on weekends so expect to queue in the warmer months on the weekend.
Tea time tends to start around 2pm but they said we could still order tea even though it was only around noon. I opted for the Duchess of Bedfordhsire, a cream tea (£7.50) which is just a pot of tea and scones with jam and clotted cream while Kat opted for the Queen Anne, a more elaborate tea (£13) that came with sandwiches, fresh fruit and fruitcake in addition to the scones and tea. She promptly extracted all the poor cucumbers from the sandwiches but made a good dent in the rest of the sandwiches, the fresh fruit was lovely and the scones were very nice. It was a bit expensive but expected it to be so for a touristy place near the Castle. The also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Leave a Comment
