"The Chiltern Hills are a beautiful, unspoilt corner of England. They lie only a few miles to the north-west of London and yet have a very rural character. The Chilterns begin in Oxfordshire in the Thames Valley and stretch north-east through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire".
    (Local Tourist Board)

Walking is the thing in Bucks. Ramblers, strollers and climbers alike can make the most of the British countryside in this county. Pictured here, 'Zorba', a local personality and dog of much rambling experience ; )

Katsina B & B (see accomodation tip) is a very good point to start a ramble through the countryside and nearby woods.

I have added a website link for suggested walks close to the village of Botley. (You will still need to take your car to the starting point). Then you can round your day off with a pint of British ale in the local pub ; )

    Tiggywinkles Animal Hospital

Named after Beatrice Potter's spikey ironing hedgehog lady... Tiggywinkles started life as a DIY hospital in somebody's garden shed. People began to bring all sorts of injured (wild) animals to the shed and Tiggywinkles grew into the famous wild animal hospital and centre it is today.

You can visit Tiggywinkles and see some of the rescued animals. Most animals are released back into the wild once they have made a full recovery but some are not able to be released - such as flightless birds and these stay at Tiggywinkles and are given enclosures as close to their natural habitat as possible.

Some animals such as the foxes, deer and badgers are not easy to see as they hide in the undergrowth - that doesn't mean to say you wont get lucky and see them... just be quiet!

You can see a few animals being cared for - mainly fledglings and baby hedgehogs.

There is a (free) car park, a shop (of course!), a field for children to run around complete with a playground for (small) children/toddlers. There is an "activity room" and a bit of a sad room dedicated to just about anything that is vaguely related to hedgehogs.

    Admission: £4.20 adult, £3 child or £12.20 family ticket (2 + 2).
You can join and become a member in which case you get in for free.

It's not a huge place - probably an hour is enough... but it's nice and all the money goes to helping the animals. If you are driving through and wanted a small break this would be an ideal spot. Likewise, if you find an injured wild animal - this is the place to take it to.

    Open 10am - 4pm

Tiggywinkles is in Haddenham (not far from Aylesbury). When you get to Haddenham there are signs to the animal hospital - you need to keep your eyes peeled because they are not all in the most obvious spots. Also when you get top Tiggywinkles it isn't immediately obvious. I have been there twice, now. Once to take an animal and once to visit the centre - both times I drove straight past and had to go back!

    Speen Horse Centre

This centre for retired, abused and unwanted horses, ponies and donkeys. A lot of the horses are retired from the army and Queens service - some due to health problems and some because of age. They've been going since the 1800's when homes were provided for the horses that pulled the carriages for the London public transport system.

It is free to get into - every day from 2pm - 4pm. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Eve & New Years Day. There is a donation box - this is a non profit organisation.

You used to be able to feed the horses carrots and polos... but not any more - for the health of the horses. Can completely understand this but it takes a dimension away from the centre.

There is a large courtyard with many stables. The horses here can be stroked and are all very gentle. It is lovely for children. There is also a very small museum which shows the history of the centre and gives some information on horses.

The centre is in Speen, just down the road from Lacey Green, Princess Risborough.
    There is limited (free) parking.

Located in Little Kimble, Buckinghamshire, is the little and very old church, All Saints. Nothing extraordinary from the outside but step inside and you'll be transported back in time, to the 13th century, by the wall paintings.

There is a painting of Saint George and behind him is his wife...knitting!
There is a frieze at the rear of the church which shows punishment - ladies having their hair pulled...
Unfortunately at some point in history some clever people painted over these amazing wall paintings... with magnolia! Thankfully it is flaking off and the paintings appear to be undamaged and waiting in anticipation for rediscovery.

There are also some original floor tiles.
