China Inn: Eat As Much As You Like!

by Confucius Updated Jun 6, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Ely's China Inn features

Now here's an interesting concept: "eat as much as you like"
Sounds like a buffet, right? Actually, you pay 10 pounds to order as much food as you can eat from the special "price deal menu" (11 pounds on Saturday).
The restaurant opens its door at 18:00 for this special dinner and I arrived 10 minutes early in order to be the first customer.
Here's how it works: First you choose from 15 different appetizers. Eat as much as you like, but you have to finish each plate before ordering any main courses.
Then there are 40 different entrees, but you can break that number down into 5 pork dishes, 12 chicken dishes, 10 beef dishes, 5 vegetable dishes, 5 noodle dishes, 2 fried rice and one steamed rice. The portions are not too big, so I tried a few entrees and then simply re-ordered the best ones. Unfortunately there are no seafood items on the "price deal menu", unless you include "Prawn Crackers" and "Crispy Seaweed" in that category.
After you are finished with all of the plates on your table then you can order more main courses or choose desserts if you have any space left. I chose lychees, again and again and again. (Each bowl only has 4 lychees, so I had to order 4 consecutive bowls.)

Favorite Dish: "Beef in Peking Sauce" was my favorite dish by far. Everything I ordered was good. I ordered the beef and the broccoli twice.

    My starters:
Spring Rolls, Satay Beef, and Aromatic Crispy Duck (Save the extra peanut sauce!)

    Main Courses:
    Roast Pork with Pineapple
    Lemon Chicken
    Beef in Peking Sauce
    Fried Broccoli
    Vegetarian Singapore Rice Noodles

    Dessert:
I ordered lychees. They also have ice cream, apple and banana fritters, and toffee apple.

Tea for Two: Mug of tea?

by leics Updated Jun 25, 2006

    Cheap & cheerful.

In Ely's market place, tables outside when it's warm and seats inside when it's not. Basic English food; tea, bacon rolls, toast etc. Cheap and cheerful.

If it doesn't appeal, there's a Starbucks opposite. If you must.

Favorite Dish: Mug of tea, 2 rounds of toast & jam 2.50 GBP. Ok.

Minster Tavern, Ely.: Decent food in nice surroundings

    Minster Tavern, Ely, England.

Not so much a restaurant as a pub that sells good food at reasonable prices. All the usual favourites are here - fish and chips, ploughman's, pies, scampi and so on, and not overpriced given the proximity to the Cathedral.

The staff were friendly, which always helps.

Favorite Dish: I had a ploughmans lunch, which is somewhat of a favourite of mine. There is a choice of three dishes, each consisting of three different English cheeses, served with the usual apple, chutney, bread (actually a bap), salad etc. Priced at under £6 it was very filling and the cheeses were obviously kept well.

The Prince Albert: Bring your own food!

    The Prince Albert

I noticed this pub on the way from Barton Road car park. It looks a pleasant enough place, but it's useful to know that they are happy for you to eat your own packed lunch (sandwiches etc) in the garden, as long as you buy a drink. That's pretty unusual for an English pub, and worth noting.

Won't be any use if it isn't garden-sitting weather though!

  • Tea For Two: Do not get Full English Breakfast here!

    by haziel75 Updated Jun 23, 2004

If you have had a full English Breakfast and know the value of a good full English Breakfast, you will not find that at Tea for Two. It is a quirky coffeeshop right in the heart of Ely. It is a tourist trap with its strategic location and unique looking shop. You can sit outside or inside, the upstairs. The service is decent, can be busy at times. If you are sitting outside, and under a tree, watch out for the birds..

So what will you get when ordering a full English Breakfast here? One fried egg, little beans, the usual bacon, two sausages, tomatoes, and NO TOASTS. Toasts are extra! That's the first. It is pricey, considering the quality of the food. 2 teas+ 2 NOT full English Breakfast = £10.

    Tea in the garden...........

Home-cooked food, locally-sourced where possible. Tables outside in the garden if it's nice, otherwise eat in the 12th century undercroft .

Good range of snacks, lunches etc. Very more-ish scones!
