The Sandstone Trail is a long distance footpath stretching some 30 miles (55km) along the backbone of central Cheshire from Frodsham to Whitchurch with tremendous views over Cheshire and beyond. The trail officially opened in 1974 but has recently been extended. It starts and ends at the railway stations so access by public transport is possible.
The trail has been split into three sections appropriate for a days hike. Sandstone Trail sections are:
Northern Section - Frodsham to Willington 17km
Central Section - Willington to Bickerton 17km
Southern Section - Bickerton to Whitchurch 17km
Equipment: Downloadable maps are available from this website - http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/countryside/walking/sandstone_trail.html
The Trail is well marked, using a mixture of finger posts and yellow waymark discs with an 'S' in a footprint. Waymarks indicate the way to go as you stand directly in front of them. Often there is a clear path on the ground, but some field paths may not be quite so obvious. Look out for stiles in the hedges, and lines in the grass showing where others have walked.
Equipment: A map always come in handy and a special Explorer Pack with details of places to stay, countryside activities and visitor attractions is available free - just phone 01244 603107 or you can order one online from this website
