Middlesbrough has a bit of a reputation for crime, so if you do decide to visit this place (and there are some good things about the place) it pays to use some common sense......... like if you have to take a camera with you, take a compact camera you can hide away in your pocket until needed... rather than something like a flashy larger camera such as a Digital SLR or one of the "Super Zoom" / "Ultra Zoom" offerings from Fuji & Olympus (e.g. Fuji S6500fd, Olympus SP-570, etc).

Also you may want to consider leaving your main phone behind if you've got something flashy like a Nokia N-series, and take either an old one or a cheaper model (e.g. Nokia 1600 series) so it doesn't matter so much if / when it gets pinched.

This warning is not without merit: a couple of years ago someone snatched my cousin's handbag in one of the shopping centres in the main part of town (but got it back after her oldest kid chased after them and stole it back)..................... while in December 2002 after my Mum (now dead) had been rushed all the way from Whitby to the now seemingly since demolished (looking at google earth) Middlesbrough General Hospital with a brain infection, and my Dad and Grandma followed on later in the car, my Dad nearly got mugged outside the hospital while using my Grandma's mobile phone to call home with a progress report.

If you are driving, look out for speed cameras because this police authority gets to keep the fines. Fact !
Some cameras are fixed (painted yellow these days ) some are set up next to an unmarked police van and there are lots of police cars roaming around.
So if you see warning signs of speed cameras.....SLOW DOWN.

Understanding the accent in this part of the world is sometimes a challenge. Get them to speak slower and you will have better luck. They have some interesting little sayings like 'don't you know' and the end of their statements.

Middlesbrough is renowned for car crime. Be careful where you park (if I go to town, I park at Teesside Park (security guards) and take a bus from there!

They're not used to tourists in the town, and some of the locals can be a bit 'unfriendly' at times.
