We were looking for somewhere to swim. Yorkshire doesn't have the weather, in my opinion, for lounging on the beach or swimming in the sea, though I did see a brave girl doing just that at Redcar one cool and overcast day.
Then I heard about Splash, a fitness centre.
Different sessions are open to the public as well as to members, so we went along at 5pm for a wonderful 2 hours in warm water. There is a large pool for swimmers and a small one for young children, and another for learners. Also there is a hot tub, spa. All are linked ,or separated by low walls.
After paying your fee -£3.60 for an adult, £2.15 per child- you then get a wrist band to access a computerised locker to leave your belongings 20p + refundable £1 deposit.
Hot showers are placed beside the entrance to the pool, and then you enter the blissful warm water.
About 15 minutes into tour swimming an announcement warns you that the waves are coming. This will happen twice more during the session. The pool becomes a rough sea with wave following wave, almost knocking you off your feet. Screams and squeals fill the air, but nobody seems to be hurt in any way. Eventually calm returns and small flurries or fountains appear in parts of the pool and stay till the end of the session. Standing by them you get a sort of massage.
Diving is not allowed though children do jump in from the side. Lifeguards are placed at each pool.
In addition to the pools, there are two flumes, tunnels to slide down into water. These are not visible from the pool itself but my daughter and grandchildren spent some time in that area.
There is also a cafe where you can get refreshment before or after your session: ]
paninis at £2.95
