Birdwatching or Welly boot wanging?

by MikeBird

I was struck by the strong welly boot theme that is evident at the RSPB's newish reserve at Saltholme between Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. There were colourful wellies perched on spikes all along the entry road to the reserve. Around the visitor centre there are numerous signs with a wellie boot indicating a different kind of activity, most of which are probably aimed for the young at heart. There's a specially designed permanent puddle for splashing in - "go on you know what want to" ! and there's a place for 'wellie wanging' otherwise known as how far can you throw your wellie boot? I do hope it manages to entice families with youngsters out to these reserves where they can witness some fantastic natural sights like the dusk roosting flight of starlings or the large flocks of Lapwings and Golden Plovers. The visitors centre is fantastic; purpose built, it has a really good cafeteria...

Gisborough Priory - 12th Century

by Muarrij

Founded by the ancestor of the Scottish king Robert the Bruce, "Robert Bruce" the 1st Lord of Annandale in 1129, Gisborough Priory lies in the town of Guisborough. The priory was destroyed almost entirely by the the dissolution of the Monasteries. The stones from the Priory were used in other buildings in the two, for example in Saint Nicholas' Anglican Church. The east side of the priory still stands with its large arch shaped window. This well known landmark now serves as the towns main symbol. This relic is now part of the English Heritage sites. Apparently the site is said to be haunted.
