Ignore The No Entry Signs!

The only way there is to drive (or cycle or walk, of course). You want to be off the A1085 road that leads into the most northern part of Redcar (near Coatham). Look for a sign at a small roundabout to Warrenby (there's a caravan site sign too). Follow that road and just keep on it as it heads through the back of the steelworks and across sand dunes. Ignore all of the "Private No Entry" signs - you ARE allowed down here. South Gare is the end of the road.

An Angler

Fishing is Britain's biggest participation sport and there's always some (fool)hardy souls on just about every breakwater and pier in the country. Here is no exception...

The Rocky Outcrop

The Rocky Outcrop, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  There is a rocky spur that juts out from the beach and when the tide goes out it makes a large pool here where birds swim.

A Different Kind Of Birdlife

A Different Kind Of Birdlife, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  Here's the Mrs on the breakwater, doing her best to shelter from the wind. It was a lovely day apart from that arctic gale! ;-)

Birdlife

Birdlife, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  There is a lot of birdlife at South Gare, especially wading birds and also Cormorants. These tend to sit on the rocky outcrop or swim in the tidal pools that get left behind at low tide. It was the cormorants that first attracted us to South Gare, as we really love those...

Lighthouse

Lighthouse, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  At the end of the breakwater is a small lighthouse (you can't visit). In fact, you can't access any of the upper part of the breakwater - that really IS private!

Looking North

Looking North, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  The delights of Harlepool (Greythorpe) Nuclear Power Station, looming large over the beach at the opposide side of the Tees. Right of that (out of the picture) is Seaton Carew and the Headland of Hartlepool (see Hartlepool page).

Looking South

Looking South, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  This is the view south to Redcar with its steelworks. You can walk right down the beach to Redcar and on towards Marske and Saltburn. The sand really goes on and on and on here.

The Breakwater

The Breakwater, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  There is a breakwater at the Gare, a bit like a pier. It says "no entry" etc etc but you can go on it OK. You can walk down either side of it, choose which side depending on how the wind is. It seems like it's always windy here but you can shelter on one side or other of the...

Fishermen's Huts

Fishermen's Huts, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  There's a cluster of fishermen's huts in a hollow in the sand dunes. Don't ask me what they do or keep in these huts, but they make an interesting and rustic little backdrop, each with their small chimney.

Old Fishing Haven

Old Fishing Haven, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  There's a small old fishing harbour at South Gare (know as "Paddy's Hole"). It's only for liesure fishing these days I think and not serious commercial stuff. The small boats in Paddy's Hole are dwarfed by the huge tanker moored in the distance at the Philips Refinery.

Watch The Shipping

Watch The Shipping, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  Tees & Hartlepool is one of the UK's busiest ports and there's a constant movement of shipping. Look out to sea from Redcar on any day and you can see the huge cargo & oil ships waiting for their turn to enter the bay. While we were there the MV "Happy Fellow" was just...

Lifeboats & Pilots

Lifeboats & Pilots, Warrenby

steventilly Says:  The Tees lifeboat is stationed at South Gare and the station is open to visitors during most normal day hours, there's even a small shop where you can by RNLI merchandise. Don't forget, the UK lifeboat service is a charitable service and all money for it has to be raised...
