    Map of Bodmin 1835

Favorite thing: Bodmin is an ancient trading town that lies on a route that crosses Cornwall North to South called the Saint's Way. The town was sometimes referred to as the Mariner's Way due to merchants from Wales, Ireland and Northern France who crossed Cornwall overland from the Camel to the Fowey.

At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 Bodmin was the only market town in Cornwall. In 1349 the Black Death reached Bodmin and devastated the population.

    High Street

Favorite thing: This is Bodmin High Street, where all the larger shops are located. Woolworth, WH Smith's, several Banks, estate agents, and a host of other shops.
Although not pedestrianised, the road is one-way (up hill), and is really only for very local 'local' traffic and tradesmens' vans, etc.

    Chapel Figures

Favorite thing: I was not entirely alone in this old Chapel. I discovered these two rathere forlorn characters standing in a corner. It seemed such a shame for them to be there, obviously deteriorating in the open air. I have no idea of their history, and there was no one available to ask.

    St petrock's Church

Favorite thing: This handsome church is the biggest in Cornwall, 151 feet long and 65 feet wide, chiefly 15th Century, but much restored. The oldest part is in the tower, where the lower walls are Norman and seven feet thick; the 15th-century top gives it a height of 94 feet. the south porch has a fine fan-vaulted roof supporting a two-storeyed room; near it lie some ancient coffin stones.

    And Into Bodmin

Favorite thing: Strange to think that not many years ago, this was the main road link, through Bodmin to the rest of Cornwall! the road to the left is the original A30 trunk road, and to the right the by-pass route, which is now by-passed itself!

    Town Library

Favorite thing: Of course, the town of Bodmin is by-passed now by the A30 dual carriageway. But the town has a host of interesting places to see, besides the pleasant shopping areas. But don't just look in the shop windows, look AT the buildings. This is a picture of the Bodmin Town Library building, constructed of local stone and granite. Imposing isn't it?

    New through old

Favorite thing: I just managed to squeeze the church tower into the old Chapel window opening. I couldn't get back any farther, or I'd be standing outside at the far end! Nice blue sky and a fluffy white cloud.
