The Golden Lion: Central Town.
It was nearly two o' clock (the time when most pubs stop serving lunch) and we were hungry! After a couple of failed attempts at rural pubs (closed) we hurried into Barnard castle, parked in the car park and looked at a couple of pub menus. We chose the Golden Lion, it seemed to have a good menu at reasonable prices and served food all day. Phewww.
Not overly large, the pub had a cosy atmosphere with a log fire roaring.
We ordered our food and settled back with our drinks, not knowing nearly an hour would pass before there was any sign of our food.
There were a number of dishes at £5.95 I think and grilled stuff, baguettes, sandwiches etc etc.
After 40 mins we had to query when our food might arrive and were only told then there had been a large order immediately prior to ours. Finally, almost an hour after ordering, the food arrrived.
Bonus points for extremely hot plates and food, as well as three vegs (frozen.) but overall, rather disappointing.
Favorite Dish: We chose;
Fish and chips
Steak and ale pie
All day breakfast
The pie was disappointing, all pastry, which was a little thick and hard, with approximately two pieces of meat and little gravy.
The fish and chips got the thumbs up, as did the all day breakfast.
