Chipmates: Best Chips In Town

Home Of The Finest Chips

Chipmates is one of the best chip shops that I know, and it has been for the entire time that I've lived here (18+ years). It's just your standard English chippy, serving Fish, Chips, Sausage, "Patties", Pies, Peas and so on - oh, and Dandelion & Burdock to wash it down.
Has recently branched into Pizza delivery too - can't comment, I only go for the chips.

Favorite Dish: Cheesie & Chips, with mushy peas, a bread bun, scraps (when available) and a can of D&B.
DELICIOUS!!

Highland Laddie: Traditional Pub

The Highland Laddie

Typical English pub, well traditional for a "town" pub rather than a "country" pub. Two big rooms and "cosy" without being overly comfortable.

Dress Code: Anything goes

"Foreigners" should be aware that English chips are not like "french fries" or "belgian frites" or anything. The ones you will get from McDonalds or Burger King might be a bit like that, but REAL chips from an English chip shop are not. For one thing, they're a lot thicker, and usually they are not crispy. Some places do do them with a bit of crunch, but in general they tend to be on the soft side. Traditionally they are eaten from the newspaper in which they are wrapped, but EU health & safety regulations now forbid this, and clean, white paper is the order of the day. At the seaside, they're best served with a pinch of sand in them ;-))
