    Barrow's Ugly Face......

    Past it's sell-by date

Although Barrow is in the process of a re-vamp, there are parts that the council seem to have forgotten about or blatantly abandoned.
Shops come and go and some retail buildings remain empty for long periods, taking on an air of neglect. The worst area as far as most people are concerned is on the Duke Street/Dalton Road end where the ugly 60's concrete monstrosity of a mall bares it's battle-scarred, graffiti covered buildings. They are a real eye-sore, particularly as many of the shops have been empty for months, if not years. Pigeons and gulls gather in the dark and dirty walkway, it's not somewhere anyone would want to linger.Neither does it do Barrow's image much good.

At long last, this eyesore is in the process of being knocked down. I won't get too excited, no doubt something equally ugly will replace it.

    A590

    Notorious A590

Barrow has a reputation for being the town at the end of the longest cul-de-sac. This is the A590. It has claimed many lives and for some reason seems to be one of the worst roads in Cumbria. Parts are dual carriageway and others are narrow and twisting. Drivers who don't know the road become impatient and take risks, often resulting in tragedy.
One of the worst junctions is at Greenodd, where you join the A590 into a lane of fast traffic. Many incidents have occurred here.
Another is known as "ambush gap" where the road narrows right down between two buildings. Personally, we have never seen an accident here. I suppose it's narrow for large heavy goods vehicles passing at the same time.
